Cousteau – In the Wake of Errol Flynn

04 Sep

I just finished reading Cousteau’s Papua New Guinea Journey. Wow, what a sensational book, especially for fans of Errol! Though Flynnie himself is not specifically mentioned, there is extremely rare & extensive exploration & exposition directly connected to E’s old turf & times in and around Papua, along with approaching 200 National Geo-like photos! It’s top of the line – marvelous for Flynn researchers.

With renowned research ships Calypso & Alcyone leading the way, an armada of Zodias, rcks , jeeps, a helicopter, seaplane & even a submarine, take a team of scientific explorers to all of Errol’s old PNG waterways and stomping grounds, including the outer islands if New Britain, New Ireland, and all the rest.

Rabaul, Port Moresby, Lae, Wau, Madang, the old gold territory – they’re all here, as are incredible descriptions and photos of all the astonishingly unique and diverse tribes & cultural rituals. And notably, there’s significant discussion regarding the very widespread practice of adult men taking very young females as lovers & wives.

Most rewarding of all may be the “spellbinding” Sepik River – “The River of the Crocadile Men” – said to be the most linguistically & culturally diverse place on earth – with approximately 200 languages and incredibly intense spriritual beliefs & practices. Natives believe the Sepik to be a sacred source of water and life, flowing directly “from the beginning of the world”!

Wouldn’t it have been so wonderful for Errol to have headed and filmed
a major exploration of PNG like this! He did out it on the map, though! – even more so than the Cousteau!!

Christopher Plummer in “Barrymore” Sept. 2014

01 Sep

I wasn’t quite sure where to post this as it is not specifically about ERROL .

The CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) will be presenting Christopher Plummer’s 1 man show  of  “Barrymore” on Saturday September 6th.  I believe this is a filmed version of the highly acclaimed stage production depicting Barrymore at the end of his life.

Christopher Plummer is famous for his performances of Shakespeare -but is likely better known for his portrayal of Captain Von Trapp in the Sound of Music -Eleanor Parker was also in that one – he has also performed at the Errol Flynn Playhouse. For anyone into Star Trek he played  General Chang in Star Trek VI.

I  found him reciting Hamlet (or was it Macbeth?) on an old Cosby episode- he shines!  I wish my English teacher had looked like that.

Now in his 80’s he has an Oscar to boot – and retains his Canadian Citizenship.

His autobiography (In Spite of Myself)  is a fun and fascinating read. Imagine hanging around with the likes of Peter O’Toole – and surviving that.  Of course there is a small mention (very small)  of  Errol.  I have read this book and found some of the writing style similar to Errol’s in MWWW- never taking himself too seriously. I have seen him interviewed on TV- lots of humor there too and great stories of the  stage actors of the time performing on TV in the 1950’s.

Like I said -not a direct link to EF I just thought it might be interesting to watch knowing how much Barrymore influenced Errol.

The Carpenters & Errol Flynn

31 Aug

HOW COULD THE CARPENTERS & ERROL FLYNN POSSIBLY BE CONNECTED?? IT ENDED UP BEING A VERY BIG CELEBRATION!

HERE ARE SOME CLUES:

1. We’ve Only Just Begun.

2. Errol was the Star of the Party.

3. There was a Bell Featured at the Occasion, Too.

4. Olivia Didn’t Make It with Errol.

5. Even So, It Still had Plenty of Oomph.

6. Bogie Attended, but without Bacall.

7. Took Place Next to the Arkansas River.

8. This Year is a Major Anniversary.

9. Inspired by Sir David DeWitt.

10. Video Available.

The Black Fox

31 Aug

In 1955, Errol Flynn made his final swashbuckler, “The Dark Avenger”. That same year, Danny Kaye made “The Court Jester”, a film that appeared to be a tribute/spoof of the swashbuckler films of Errol Flynn, complete with Basil Rathbone as the villain, Mildred Natwick (of “Against All Flags”) in a pseudo Una O’Connor-like role, as well as a Robin Hood-like character that seemed written specifically for Errol: The Black Fox. Was Errol offered the role? Probably. Instead, the heroic role was played by Edward Ashley, who received 12th billing. Of course, if Errol had played the role, his name would have been much, much higher in the credits. The film is still very entertaining.(and highly recommended for fans of Flynn) But if it had co-starred Errol Flynn, it would be much more famous.

Hatfield House

29 Aug

Hi all- I found an interesting story about Errol’s visit to Hatfield House  in 1954. This is the Errol I like to think about.

When Hollywood Came to Hatfield

I did search before I posted but I apologise  in advance if this has already been recounted.  Wouldn’t it have been great to take the tour with him!

For whatever reason, The Last Of Robin Hood was not released today in the Chicago area.   Can anyone verify if it opened elsewhere today in the USA?   If yes, can you post some reviews?  Thanks Ralph
