Errol’s Menagerie & Lifelong Love of Pets

11 Dec

FLYNN

FLYNN We all know Errol Loved his pets … and they Loved him! … That being the case …

With the double-digits & wonderful spirit of December now upon us, I’d like to initiate an identification of and tribute to Errol’s astonishing lifelong menagerie of pets – his dogs, his horses, his cats, his monkeys, his parrots, his goats, his pigs, his fox, his lion cub, his peacocks, his sheep, his snake(s), and all others – commencing with ‘Man (or perhaps Dog) Friday’ and whatever native pets he may have had in Tasmania and mainland Australia – including, of course, any of the very rarely kept Tasmanian Devils or Tigers, platypodes, wallabies, kangaroos, and/or any other indigenous ‘pets’ he may have ‘held’ for any length of time through his father. And, as some of us will recall, he once had some ducks.

Together, with this identification of pets, it would be wonderful to include any photos, descriptions, and stories of interest, including how Errol came to obtain his pets, how he named them, where and when they were in his life, whatever happened to them, etc.

Also, any thoughts/feelings about what Errol’s profound love of animals said about him as a person??

To start things off, here’s one of many wonderful relevant photos! Anyone know the story on this one? Perhaps at Mulholland??

Errol with Goat and Dog

All photos & stories regarding Daisy (aka Man Friday), Arno, Onyx, Moody, Bes-Mudi (aka Bes Nov, Bes Novi & Besnovitch), Chula, Greno, Cold Nose, Peewee, Jack & Mike, Guyceewee, (and all others!) are greatly welcomed and encouraged!

P.S. Isn’t it intriguing that the Flynn coat-of-arms includes an heraldic canine, as on the elegant trivet at the top of this tab!?! Errol surely knew and appreciated that, of course.

THANK YOU TO TINA FOR THE GREAT PHOTO OF ERROL ABOVE!!!

— Tim

Thanks for starting this thread Tim,I look forward to reading everyone’s answers & comments as I love seeing photos of Errol with his pets and other animals.I think Errol’s love for his animals shows what a caring, lovely man he was.I remember reading that the photo posted of Errol with the little baby goat & puppy was taken at Mulholland Farm and that the Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy Errol is holding (or Lion Hounds which I think they were called back then?) was part of one of the very first litters of that breed born in America.I remember reading also that Errol is riding his horse Onyx in San Antonio & when I watched it a while ago I remember hearing him call Onyx by name.I am interested to read/learn more here about Errol’s dogs, especially his fave Arno.I always wondered if Errol named him after an Australian biscuit which was very popular in his time here (and still is now) called Arno Shortbread.Does anyone know how he named Arno? I’ve not read it anywhere before. :)

Hi Tim, I don’ t think that’s Onyx in Dodge City as that horse looks bay coloured? Same with the lovely horse in that great photo of Errol & Sean together? It’s hard to pick him out in the s
San Antonio clip as they go past so quickly, but I remember there’s a scene in San Antonio where Errol’s character Clay is with his friend Charlie (the same actor is in Dodge City too) and he (Charlie) is originally riding Onyx; I think it’s in that very scene too that you can hear Errol call him Onyx, he is very glossy pitch black and really
beautiful. Later in the movie after Charlie is killed, Errol/Clay is riding
Onyx, extremely well too. :)

P.S. That is very interesting that you are related to that actor Paul Kelly & to Gene Tierney (I love her in The Ghost & Mrs Muir),what a great connection to have. :)

That’s terrific Tim,I’ll try & find a pic of Onyx,I didn’t think it would be so hard to find one of him? And I don’t know how to save screen caps (from San Antonio) to the computer either.Bes-Mudi must have been a good relaxed cat to be out on the yacht with all that water around.Errol had some very interesting names for some of his pets didn’t he. :)

P.S. I just found the following article about Onyx.
news.google.com…

If he was in Silver River & They Died With Their Boots On with Errol too, then this must be him.

It seems as if Guyceewee was more like Lili’s dog, and on discussing it Robert and I agreed it was possibly first named Guy, with the French pronunciation ending in the [i]-sound, not [ai] as it is pronounced in English. Then, Robert added, in time, he was probably called Guycee and soon the “wee” as sign of cuty-ness was included.

Robert and I think Guyceewee is just a pun without any deeper meaning. :-)
As for Greno, the article I used as a source mentioned it was a cocker. The dog on the first photo, which is from that article, may be a cocker, but somehow it looks also a bit like a dachshund. The one with Patrice is certainly a small dachshund. To me, both dogs look a little bit alike, but then if this is Greno he cannot have been a cocker. I would also say that the lady christening the dog is Patrice and the bottle she’s holding might be a small Greno champagne bottle. I can have a look at the original article when I find some time and especially when I find the article!
Regarding Cold Nose, I’ve never come across anything more detailed than several photos, which I regret a lot because it interests me, too, where EF got him from, how long he lived etc. There are the famous promotional photos with EF and CN and Waltraut Haas, of course. The doberman is on several promotional photos at Mulholland after the trial, but again, no additional more specific information, I’m sorry. I think that Arno and the Rhodesian Ridgebacks are the only ones where we have rough “acquisition dates”, and of course, the time of Arno’s death, but the others will probably forever remain unsolved as for the question when the entered and left Errol’s life.

This should be Cold Nose. I’m sorry I have no input re: your other questions. Hope someone else does?

Where exactly did you mean to have seen Claude? I’m sorry I have no pictures of her, she was not really “important” to me up to now…

Have you got “Errol Flynn Slept Here”? It’s in there. I’d have to check but don’t have the book available right now. Somewhen around 1946/7, I think it was Nora’s coming out party.

I think they’d prefer the Zaca for their cruises then. :-) It seems that Moody is a bit darker but I’m no Schnauzer expert to go into details.

And this one of the boys with Miss B.I read that Arno chased her & bit her while making The Sisters, probably explains why she’s looking at him so warily, lol.Arno must have known she was going to be mean to his lovely Master during his next movie with her. :(

Hi Tim;
The crest is a “Flynn Crest” and there are many Flynn Crests. One would need to know the exact Flynn lineage to establish to which family belongs which crest. Maybe you can find out! Flynn is a very common name in Ireland and this crest it is not Errol’s Crest!
Mostly a family crest only have people who are of nobility or received the privilege for a very special reason of a distinguished service.
You are very good in tracing things maybe you could find out if Errol stems from Irish Nobility? But don’t forget that I have Errol’s family genealogy from his mothers and father’s side.
But it is very nice that you award Errol with crest! I like it!
In addition, I am very flattered that you use MY PICTURE of Errol with the lamb. You see, there are so many pictures of Errol with a cigarette in his mouth and I took out of some pictures the cigarette and this is one of them. Needless to say, I was scolded for doing it and rightly so as I was defacing public property. I just disliked seeing him always with a cigarette in so many pictures. I will publish the right one and you can exchange it.
Take care!

Hi Tim;
I sure like your fig leave explanation and makes me feel a little better about the deformation I did.
Anyway here is the original and you can exchange it or just leave it as is – your choice. I have a lot more animal pictures and may post them as I have energy. As I am just recuperating from cancer and feel not on top of the world.
