A note about Comment/Post Moderation!

19 Mar

Just a quick note to mention that I know it must be frustrating to post a comment or post an article only to see it not immediately published. This moderation is selected by the blogware according to certain criteria that sometimes makes no sense. It is intended to stop the enormous amount of spamming that the blog undergoes these days. This is the price of being well read and linked to from all over the world so much so that spammers think posting a fake comment with a backlink will get them traffic to their websites or affiliate marketing sites. In fact, it won't because of the the no follow tags that are automatically added to their links. Google or other search engines will not list these as working links. However, they still persist… so please know that as soon as I see a moderated comment or post with a familiar name, I approve it immediately!

Errol on a Barrel!

06 Feb

image

Hi Everyone!

I was MIA and I really missed you all and the Blog!  I wonder if I ever catch up with all the news
as it has been a long time.

In a nutshell since August things went from bad to worse!  First I had eye surgery, which should have
been simple, but you guessed it – it was not!  After that and thinking all is well again my
daughter became ill, then to top the “Bill of Fair” my husband got very sick
and had to have bypass surgery and that was an ordeal as it was associated with
complications twice.  We nearly lost him,
but thanks to the Lord he pulled through!

Now that the worsted is over and the family finally breathes
again I thought it is time to get back on the Blog, although maybe just
part-time but nevertheless one has to be grateful for small mercies.

With my return to action I thought I give you a giggle!

Errol on a Barrel!

These are hilarious pictures of our Hero in a Western Sombrero sitting on a barrel our good old Errol!

What was Warner Brothers thinking to make pictures like that?  I can understand for their internal special
effects photography – but to publish them?

What are your thoughts about it?  No doubt they are funny!

Crossed Swords Dvd Review

14 Dec

For many fans of Errol Flynn, this movie has been a Holy Grail quest, to find a decent print and own it on Dvd.
I for one have been one of those fans who has seen a few varying quality versions over the years, none of which have been easy to enjoy, due to washed out colour, poor definition and generally bad picture quality.
But recently some Italian language prints in Brilliant condition surfaced, and it was only a matter of time and determination from a hard working Dvd company, and a persistant fan who will remain nameless, which resulted in the Dvd i see before me now.
A Good Job has been done in restoring this movie to the quality one could only dream of previously. The Picture is Sharp, the colours vibrant and Jack Cardiff's superb Technicolour Photography simply looks lush, at times the outdoor scenes remind me of the Rich Colours seen in Flynn's classic Masterpiece,The Adventures Of Robin Hood.
As for the film itself, well it isn't without it's flaws, the supporting cast crys out for the quality of Flynns classic supporting stars like Alan Hale and Olivia De Havilland or Basil Rathbone, and most of the Italian cast are dubbed into English. However the dubbing isn't bad and is not distracting or indeed always obvious, in fact the voice actors match the characters well, and do not sound as if they've been recorded seperately in an Aircraft Hangar, which is often the case in dubbed movies.
The plus points of the movie outweigh any minus you may find, for a start Flynn looks great, he obviously got himself fit for the role and lost weight,in fact he looks leaner than he had for a few years and looks a lot healthier than he did in Against All Flags, which was made three years earlier.
Flynn bounces around like an Alley Cat and all done with that famous Twinkle in the eye,he looks happy and energetic and seems to be having a ball making the film.
There are several humorous balcony scenes reminiscent of Don Juan, Screaming ladies, angry pursuing lovers and husbands, and of course a few light hearted Sword duels.
Action highlights are a Tavern Duel which is well staged and culminates with Flynn Duelling on top of some beer barrels, taking a few swigs on the way in a tongue and cheek manner.
As for the love interest,Gina Lollobrigida looks Magnificent, perhaps this helped nurture Flynns enthusiasm for the movie, and what red blooded male could blame him for that ?
The Final climatic Duel is probably Flynn's best from his 1950's run of Swashbuckling roles, it is fast paced, aggressive and Flynn's ability to look totally convincing in a duel, not just in his moves but in facial expression, are example again of what makes this legendary actor stand out from the rest. He had no peers in this type of role, others may have tried and come close, but Flynn excelled and never recieved enough credit for the skill required to be not only a convincing action hero, but a sympathetic one.
This is all helped here by some interesting fast paced mobile camerawork from Jack Cardiff, a style Flynn later used in his Errol Flynn Theatre TV Shows in England in 1956.
If you're a Flynn fan who has always wanted a decent copy of this movie, buy it and put yourself out of years of misery….for any other fans curious enough, you should buy it too and revel in seeing Flynn temporarily, looking back to his best.

Flynn's Room on the Queen Mary…

09 Dec

Hallo, Chums! We have some differing information about where Flynn's room on the Queen Mary is located today. Robert's adviser on the matter is a historian of the Queen's history and should know his stuff, yet it differs from what I discovered from the reservations department a few years ago who told me the room was refurbished, was renumbered M012 and was located on the port side of the ship on M Deck. This would make it on the dockside of the vessel, and it was easy to locate. Below are some pics of the tiny hallway leading to the doorway of M012 and some shots of the surrounding area. I noticed a bar was located adjacent to a sitting area outside of Flynn's hallway. I figured I was in the right place. It is my fervent hope that M012 is the actual location of Flynn's room so that fortunate visitors to the ship can stay in the room! I am trying to find the email I received (I printed it out and kept it on my bookshelf) but cannot find it now, naturally! It is around somewhere and I hope that perhaps the email address and name of the person who responded to me might shed some light on the two divergent bits of information we have… as with nearly anything Flynn-ish, tis a mystery….

Note: the door is to the left of the M012 placard. The device above the number is perhap a doorbell of some sort?

UPDATE 7/03/2011
I have found a nice gentleman who has a Queen Mary website (his old site Julian tells me) that features maps of the Queen Mary at the time Errol sailed aboard the great ship. I now attach the map showing Errol's room number M38 on the port side, featuring a port hole, and the part of the renumbering list showing M38 became M012. The map shows the configuration of the hallway picture also attached previously which matches the number of doors and their locations in this hallway going to M012 on the Main Deck. Thank you, Juilan!

Sirocco Club

08 Dec

Hi all members,

I have a close contact and ardent Flynn fan and collector in Finland, who apparently has a “Sirocco Club” member card with member name mentioned on it dated to the '30s and we both would like to know more about it. Any information regarding this would be welcome to help him out. It has never been mentioned in the many biographies etc, I have read.

Personally, having read almost everything about Flynn that is available, I don't know anything about this particular subject apart from Errol having a yacht named “Sirocco” for the second time which is fatal in naval terms, but nevertheless knowing our hero he did anyway and bless him for this, as we all know that he defied the normal etc. and that is at least one of the reasons why we respect him so much.

Kind regards,

Jan

Errol Flynn-inspired cartoon characters

29 Nov

Hi fellow Flynnians!

Aside from being a Flynn fan, I'm also a big Disney fan (and a fan of animation in general). Yesterday I saw Disney's new (50th) animated film “Tangled”. It's a really great retelling/re-imagining of the fairytale of Rapunzel. Anyway, so what does this have to do with Errol Flynn?

Well…the main hero in the film is a guy named Flynn Rider (actual first name Eugene — note the first initial “E”). The Disney filmmakers named him after Errol, and partially modeled his character on Errol and his swashbuckling hero persona. Here's a brief description of Flynn Rider, taken from a promotional magazine for “Tangled”: “The rogue bandit Flynn Rider is daring, and has always relied on his wit, charm and good looks to get out of even the stickiest of situations.”

Also, here's a quote about the character from one reviewer of the movie: “He's named Flynn by the way, and may remind parents, or grandparents, of a similar hero, circa 1937's 'The Prince and the Pauper'.”

And, to top it off, in the film Flynn Rider tells Rapunzel that he took his name from a legendary swashbuckler by the name of Flynnigan Rider — a man who was daring, heroic, good with the ladies, rich, and could do anything and go anywhere in the world. Sound familiar? :-)

So, this is the 2nd time (if you count their animated version of Robin Hood) that Disney has created an Errol Flynn-inspired animated character. I also know of 3 other Errol-inspired animated characters: The heroic archer-poet called Bow and the hero pirate called Sea Hawk — both from the 1980's animated TV series “She-Ra: Princess of Power”, and the heroic swashbuckling mouse Reepicheep — a computer-animated character in the Disney live-action “Narnia” films.

Anyone else know of any others?

CoCo Flynn?

19 Nov

Here is a bit of a strange thing!

Is the name Coco Flynn familiar to you? The “granddaughter of Errol Flynn”, according to herself has been attending Flynn events in Hollywood for about a year and the press apparently takes her at her word for the authenticity of her claims but Rory Flynn does not! Rory tells us this woman has been exploiting her father's name and attending events honoring Errol Flynn or related to her family members such the Hollywood Premier of the film the “Road to Freedom” about Sean Flynn's career as a photographer in Vietnam…

Despite being told to stop by Rory, Coco Flynn persists she is related to Errol and is apparently having a high old time in Hollywood!

If Rory shows up in Hollywood at the same event some time, I hope this chick knows where the nearest exit is…

Errol Flynn's Cufflinks

13 Nov

You may have seen this auction item on ebay? Errol Flynn's Monogrammed 14K Button with Provenance it has ended without a buyer but may be back! The description adds another layer of understanding to the things going on in Vancouver, BC in the days before and after Flynn died of a massive heart attack in the condo-apartment at 1310 Burnaby St. It tells a tale:

“Single 14 K gold (tested) monogrammed button which belonged to the late Hollywood movie actor Errol Flynn with a four page letter of provenance, acquired in 1959. Provenance is a four page letter written and signed before her death in 2008 by the late Mrs. Joan Keenlyside, wife of the late Judge Harold Keenlyside, O.C. of the British Columbia Supreme Court of Justice, who died in 2001. Judge and Mrs. Keenlyside were personal friends of Mr. & Mrs. George Caldough (Mr. Caldough was a Vancouver, B.C. stock promoter) who she refers to as “Mr. & Mrs. C” in this letter. This letter of provenance and the 14 K gold monogrammed in script “EF” button belonging to Errol Flynn was passed down to her son. The button measures 9/16″ in diameter and weighs 3.7 grams. Each page of the letter measures 8″ x 5 5/16″. The four page letter reads:

“In 1959 Errol Flynn was a house guest of Mr. & Mrs. C (Mr. C. promoter / entrepreneur / stockbroker) at their luxury home (rented) in West Vancouver, British Columbia. At the time his whole preoccupation was with selling his luxury yacht which was moored in the Bahamas. He made no secret of the fact that he was broke and all depended on this sale – necessitating long phone calls at all times of day & night. He and Mr. & Mrs. C were guests at a large cocktail party in Vancouver, B.C. on the day of his death. He excused himself as he was not feeling well & moved into a nearby guest room, lay down & subsequently died. After all was over the C's returned to their home in West Vancouver. Unbeknownst by their friends and aquaintances they also were flat broke & were looking to Errol Flynn to perhaps help them launch a new fancy restaurant they were thinking of launching in high income West Vancouver. Mrs. C told me they were aghast and she went to the room where Errol Flynn had slept & opened the clothes closet and all that was there was a threadbare blazer a few buttons hanging loosely. She said to her husband: quote ” we will never recover those telephone bills – what shall we do?” She decided perhaps something could be recovered on the apparently few gold buttons left on the jacket. She clipped them off – 2 large buttons on the front – 2 small buttons, one on each cuff where obviously 2 more had been at one time. Each one inscribed with his signature “EF”. I met Mrs. C at a dinner party in Vancouver and it was soon after the above events. She told myself and anyone else close by the above course of events where upon I said would be interested in one of the smaller buttons for my gold charm bracelet which she had admired each time we met. She acquiesced immediately & on mentioning the whole thing to my husband across the room – he said sure “make her an offer”. She immediately accepted and said she would bring it to me at our next meeting – a luncheon at the West. Vancr. Tennis Club. This came about & we exchanged the button & the cheque & that was the end of it. I have the understanding that they are both deceased, after this many years. Joan L. Keenlyside.”
