The Errol Flynn Blog

What a shame. This confirms why it was so ill-advised to make this movie. Making a film about Errol Flynn obviously compels a premier script, top-level production, and funds sufficient to communicate the uniquely astonishing life of Errol Flynn. It appears the film missed on all three, resulting in a “boring”, “low budget looking” film, unworthy of the Big Screen, where the Great Errol Flynn belongs. As we here all know, Errol despised mediocrity.

We’re fortunate Kevin, Susan, and Dakota (and others) saved the film to the extent they could. All those who did their best should be commended. This particular movie was apparently doomed for mediocrity before it ever set sail. It’s ill-conceived aim, poor script & screenplay, inadequate and unsuited directorial team, and grossly insufficient budget, made it unworthy for sailing the high seas. Telling the story of Errol Flynn requires a world-class yacht. It can’t be told with a john-boat.

Let’s all help make the next one a masterpiece!

Upward & onward!

Well, I have seen it and will provide more details of my assessment when I can. For now, at the theater, on my cell, I’ll just summarize by saying that, in my opinion – despite excellent acting by Kevin Kline & Sudan Sarandon, and good acting by Dakota Fanning – It’s not a very good movie. At very best a C+, punctuated wth only a very few A-level scenes. It really does look like a Lifetime afternoon soap-opera type movie – except that it has Kevin Kline, Susan Sarandon & Dakota Fanning in it!

The low budget really shows throughout, really preventing any inspiring portrayal of Errol’s extraordinary life & lifestyle. Nothing exciting, inspirational or extraordinary.

Older viewers who remember how big and bigger than life Flynn was, walked away either c
very disappointed, or, some, only very mildly entertained. No children watched. College age and early twenties didn’t seem to care one way or another, far more interested in Dakota than Flynn.

Dakota looked lovely, and acted good, but I think her role was undermined by the not completely accurate storyline, in that I think Beverly was probably much spunkier than how she was portrayed.

It won’t be in the theaters long. That’s for sure. It’s a cable movie, not an Errol Flynn big screen production. I suspect Errol would have preferred they showed all of him in more colorful & controversial fashion. If you didn’t know how great Flynn was before coming into the theater, you’d certainly never learn so from this movie. What might have helped would have been some news reels or okd movie clips. There were NONE. Not even a clip of Robin Hood – which the movie is named after! I think the audience would have loved, and the movie would have greatly artisticall benefitted from, a clip of Errol dueling Sir Guy or perhaps kissing Olivia. Probably, again, at least partially, a budgetary thing. Likewise, you can’t film a mivie about one of the very greatest world travelers ever all in Atlanta!!!!!!!! Good Lord, as Dakota said to Ma Aadland: He’s Errol Flynn!
