Robin Hood Matte Painting and Behind The Scenes.

24 Oct

Film Grab

A Beautiful woman on a narrow stairway.

This was probably during the ransom robbery feast scenes.

Before Curtiz took over.

Are those stand ins for the final shot?

What were they discussing?

Some of these I have never seen before.

I have long wondered who painted that matt background painting. You know some of the guys who did those back scene paintings for Hollywood went on to become famous and much coveted California “Plein Air” or Impressionist painters who’s works today fetch figures in the six digit range. I would like to know what happened to this massive backdrop painting, does anyone know? Thanks for the post and photos!

Oh and let me add, maybe it wasn’t that big after all???? And optical illusion came from the camera making it appear so gigantic????

I saw that painting in person a few years back in Hollywood at a screening of “The Adventures of Robin Hood”. Rudy Behlmer was there (I spoke to him afterwards.) and they recreated the sound effect for the arrows. The matte painting was in the front lobby and was, if not small, then not very big. Just the right size for the camera. But SO well done.

That had to be great, zacal. … Was this the event, with sound effects master Ben Burtt?

Yes!!! They discovered/deduced Warner’s process for recording the sound of an arrow shot by Howard Hill. They then recreated it. And damn if it didn’t sound exactly like those distinctive arrows in ‘The Adventures of Robin Hood’. A fantastic use of sound effects.

Beautiful, twinarchers. Thank you. They really and rightfully brought in the best for Flynn.

I think master matte man Paul Detlefsen may have painted or supervised painting for Robin Hood.
