More clippings —

11 May

Hopefully with a more positive outlook than the last batch. I found the Erben one particulary fascinating, trouble just seemed to follow Doc Erben around.

I spent a few hours the other night going through all these newspaper clippings (something I have been meaning to do for a while now) I had intentionally set aside an hour to do this… which very quickly turned into four hours; truly fascinating stuff I have to say…

best wishes,

Brian.

Flynn Clippings (UK)

10 May

Hello fellow bloggers,

I'd like to begin this post by sending all my best wishes and prayers to Jack Marino's wife Louise and of course to Jack and his family.
Prayers and best wishes also to our beloved administrator and overseer of this wonderful blog David. I haven't had time to get to the internet much in the past few weeks but both David and Jack, who have given so much to the name of Errol Flynn, have never been far from my thoughts; God bless you both.

I found a little time last night to scan a few newspaper articles about Errol… I have scanned quite a lot of these so may post a few more if they are of interest.

best wishes,

Brian.

Errol Flynn as inspiration for Thor film character

09 May

This weekend I saw the new movie “Thor”, based on the Marvel Comics superhero and his adventures. I really enjoyed the film, and was surprised to find one of the characters in it (he's a character from the Thor comic books) resembles, in part, Errol. His name is Fandral and he's one of the Warriors Three and friend of Thor, the main hero. He looks like a combination of: Oliver Queen (aka Green Arrow from DC comics who's modeled after Errol and Robin Hood), Cary Elwes from “The Princess Bride” and “Robin Hood Men In Tights”, and a young Errol Flynn! Joshua Dallas is the young actor who plays Fandral.

I found the following on the Wikipedia page for the “Thor” film:

“[Fandral is] a member of the Warriors Three, characterized as an irrepressible swashbuckler and romantic…Joshua Dallas said he believed that Fandral 'would like to think of himself a philanderer. He’s a lover, not a fighter'. Dallas also mentioned that Errol Flynn was an inspiration for the character stating, 'He was a big inspiration for the character and for me. I watched a lot of his movies and kind of got that into my bones. I tried to bring out that little bit of Flynn-ness in it. Flynn had a lot of that boyish charm that Fandral’s got all in him'.”

So I thought that was pretty cool. :-) I've attached 2 images: one of Fandral from the Thor comics, and the other of Joshua Dallas as Fandral.

Errol in Cannes

07 May

In this video clip, you can have a short glimpse at “the very confidential Errol Flynn” at the opening of the film festival of Cannes in probably 1949. Hope you enjoy!

And here, if you scroll down, you see him try a boat named “Monocoque”… just to add to Tina's previous boat post.

Let's move forward…

02 May

We've had some rough reporting to read here on the blog and we are all concerned about the outcomes of recent events for some of our members. This kind of thing shows what a tight-knit and supportive group of people we are and I am particularly happy to have such caring and supportive friends from around the world in this time of my personal grief. Yet, this said, the blog seems to have come to a full stop. Nobody wants to be the first to go back to our main subject in view of what has happened and our thoughts and prayers are with Jack and Louise Marino today. Let's Refuse to be Afraid and go forward…

I was visiting a friend the other day and found on an end table a copy of a book called “Heroic War Stories” and was astonished to find that the cover was illustrated with a picture of three men's faces in military uniform, the center picture being a depiction of Errol Flynn in Objective Burma!

Heroic War Stories

Gallery Books 1988

Writers including Alistair McLean, David Niven, Joseph Heller, tell their real-life and fictional front-line tales. David Niven's contribution is from his book of remembrances The Moon's A Balloon and there are other wonderful tales of military service both fact and fiction in this hardcover volume. I was unable this morning to find a picture of the book's cover but when I next visit my friend I will ask if I can take the book home and scan it for the blog.

Flynn has a way of showing up at the most surprising times!

Louise Marino

02 May

Our great friend Jack Marino has been at the center of many things related to Errol Flynn including books and documentaries and interviews, and he and his lovely wife Louise hosted a truly epic party on the occasion of Errol's 100th birthday. His wife Louise opened her home and heart to so many of us who were meeting for the first time in his home as well as private events of the legendary Mulholland Drive Boys. Robert has reported that Louise has suffered a serious heart attack and is in a coma at Northridge Hospital undergoing a series of tests and Jack asks that we keep her in our thoughts and prayers in hopes of a full recovery. Jack we hold you both in our thoughts and prayers…

A Sad Note To Report

26 Apr

After a valiant fight against his illness, David DeWitt’s brother, Bob, passed away in his sleep yesterday morning at 10:45 am while his family watched over him. At his request, he will be laid to rest alongside their father in the family plot at Clear Lake, WA.

I’m sure all of us here at the blog share in the pain of David’s and his family’s loss, and hope that they soon find some comfort and solace. If the quality of character of David himself is any indication, his brother Bob must have been a wonderful fellow.

Our sincerest sympathies, David, to you and yours.

Robert and all at the Errol Flynn Blog
