Becoming Bond

09 Jul

I’ve just seen a truly great and very clever documentary film directed by Josh Greenbaum ‘Becoming Bond’ about another Australian devil-may-care actor, George Lazenby. Infamous for being the forgotten 007 of a single Bond film, 1969’s ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’. I couldn’t help but draw parallels between Lazenby’s attitude, charm and charisma to that of fellow Aussie Errol Flynn. They both lived life their way, not pandering to Hollywood. After completing OHMSS Lazenby turned down a 6 picture deal and a $1 million bonus from the producers to continue playing Bond. For one he thought in the era of Make Love Not War the Bond franchise wouldn’t last (wrong!), secondly the ridiculously restrictive contract would have been a straight-jacket for him (good call!). He walked away, bought a yacht and sailed the Mediterranean thinking he’d get easy money doing Italian movies. That didn’t really turnout as he planned, but a rich and ultimately lucrative life followed never the less – 2 marriages, kids, B movies, TV movies and guest spots and amassing a fortune in real estate.

Not that Errol would have been a Bond, like Lazenby he was far too independent for that, and why would he need to act as Bond when in many ways he was already living the life.
Lazenby’s here in Perth as part of the Revelation Perth International Film Festival promoting the film. Becoming Bond has had a couple screenings accompanied by a Q&A with George, and he’ll again make an appearance today following a screening of OHMSS. Highly recommended.

Errol Flynn – The Great White Hope of Hollywood

03 Jul

July 3, 1938

Los Angeles Examiner – by Dorothy Manners

Errol Flynn: White Hope of Color Writers

Errol Flynn may be a bit of a problem child to Warner Brothers, but he’s the white hope of the “color” writes for magazines and newspapers, who’ll take their movie heroes with a dash of excitement every time.

The same reasons that turn the hair on Errol’s bosses gray are the very ones that make him the pet of the scribes. No one ever seems to know where the dashing Flynn is going to be at any given time.

Hollywood used to be filled with gay adventuresome blades like Flynn in the “good old days.” Remember when John Gilbert and Great Garbo used to stage an “elopement” almost every weekend – and there was also the memorable occasion when John walked into the Beverly Hills police station and told the amazed captain he wanted to stay there for the night!

Wally Reid used to make Hollywood Boulevard sizzle as he tore by in his bright blue sportster with the top down, his blaring automoble horn heard for miles.

Rudy Valentino used to overwhelm lovely strange ladies by inviting them to tangle with him. After the dance was over, he would bow politely, escort them to their tables, and they might never see him again except on the screen! But what an adventure to write home about!

The present-day movie star has changed. Careers have been put above the excitement of being devil-may-care personalities playing for the crowds. Dignity has set in, in large doses.

Only Errol Flynn remains, a last remaining adventurer in a colony of actors who seldom do the unexpected anymore.

Flynn River

28 Jun

You always rolled in style
And always brought a smile …

Oh dreammaker, you heartbreaker
You were off to see the world,
And there was such a lot of world to see …

June 28, 1935

Harrison Carroll – Los Angeles Evening Herald Express

Lili Damita’s new groom, Errol Flynn, is versatile to no end. In addition to acting for Warner pictures (he has a good chance for the lead in Captain Blood) the young Irishman is writing a book about his experiences in the interior of New Guinea.

Seems he once went there on commission of the British government to promote peace between the tribes of aborigines. And, while there, was lucky enough to make a gold strike and have a river named after him.

All in addition, of course, to his prowess as an athlete. Flynn was the amateur boxing heavyweight champion of Ireland and competed in the 1928 Olympic Games. And he’s an ace at tennis, too, which is Hollywood’s favorite game.
