Here’s a rare 1933 home movie showing the exterior of Caesar’s essentially how Errol would have first seen it.

And here’s how it looks today, at the same location since the Roaring Twenties:

(When in Coronado, Errol is thought to have enjoyed the closely-related “Jack Salad” at the La Avenida Cafe, invented by Jack Clapp, who claimed to have co-invented the Caesar Salad.)
At about 1:25 – 1:30, you can see extremely rare filming of the Foreign Club. This is where the young teenage sensation Carmen Cansino – a legendary future friend of Errol’s – began her dancing career in Mexico, Christmas Day, 1932. Indeed, she may very well have been there when this film was made in ’33. By 1935, she was performing at Caliente, as Rita Cansino, where she was “discovered” by Fox Studios. A couple of years later, with Columbia Pictures, she adopted her mother’s maiden name and became Rita Hayworth.
Cool!
Your research Tim is the greatest. Looking forward to many more of your fab contributions. Keep on digging! I love your finds!
Thank you so much, Tina. That’ so very kind of you.
And, while documenting Errol’s connection to Baja, it is notable that the “Irish-British” “Actor-Author” Senor Flynn officially emigrated (on foot) to the United States from Calexico, Mexico!
