I think you look for the original name of Hawaii. When Captain Cook discovered Hawaii he named the island after the people, which where called the Owyhees.

Now that the territory of Hawaii has been correctly identified as the general location where Errol declared he wanted to live and had purchased property to do so, the question remaining is where exactly in Hawaii that property was, and what was it called (2’H’s, 2’u’s, 2’e’s.) It still exists by name and can be found by name on some current maps, but it has been repeatedly and very significantly lessened in size through subdivisions and sale since 1941.
It wasn’t the Parker Ranch, but it was nearby and quite well known in Hawaii back in those days.
Maui and Haleakala could be seen from the property. Captain King Kamehameha was born about twenty miles north of the property, Cook was murdered about twenty miles south.

The sale price was said to be $250,000.
Also of interest is that, during the same timeframe (early 1941) he was in Hawaii negotiating this purchase, Errol reported trying to enlist in the U.S Armed Forces, requesting assignment either nautical or air service. He further reported that his enlistment was denied due to a U.S. military rule that foreigners could not enlist, even Errol, who had a relatively soon-to-be-approved application in for U.S. citizenship. This prohibition may have changed after Pearl.
Wow, how Errol’s life may have taken a dramatically different course, if he had moved to Hawaii, ran a ranch and/or joined the Navy or Army Air! If they had let him in, I believe he would have been extraordinary officer.

You are amazing! … When the quiz is done, I will post some fascinating history about changes in the cattle business on the ranch Errol wanted, including how Herefords were largely replaced by Angus, and how Hawaiian beef sales were undermined by imported hind quarter (steak cuts only)from the mainland, forcinging Hawaiian ranchers to drastically discount the full carcasses of their cattle. Anyhoo, I found it fascinating!

Here’s one account, from Harrison Carroll of the Los Angeles Evening Express, March 3, 1941:
“As new owner of the Hue Hue Ranch in Hawaii, Errol Flynn, Irish film star, will supply beef and horses to the United States Army and Navy.
The government contracts were awarded to the previous operators of the property, but it is being arranged for him to finish it out.
Hollywood is surprised to learn of the extent of his investment in the islands. He has announced so many schemes and projects that the film colony usually just takes them with a grain of salt.
But Hue Hue is comprised of 15,000 acres and includes everything from beach frontage to the slopes of an extinct volcano.
The property is already stocked with 3,500 head of cattle and 435 horses. Eighty-seven men are employed upon the place.
The name is romantic enough for a film star. ue Hue is Hawaiian for “the meeting place of kings.””
Here’s an historical description:
“Half-Hawaiian John Avery Maguire established Huehue Ranch in 1886 on the slopes of Hualalai. Maguire leased lands from the Bishop Estate and inherited lands from his first wife, Luka Hopulaau; he later added acreage acquired from Kapi`olani at Kaloko. Two generations after Maguire’s time, his granddaughter’s husband, Arthur Stillman, took over ranch management and built Huehue into one of the top 20 landholdings in Hawai`i, its 40,000 acres running from the sea to high forested lands.”

Some of you may know that I lived on the Big Island of Hawaii about 5 years ago. I confess I had no idea I was anywhere near Flynn country driving a jeep from Hawi (Haw-vee) high in the Kohala District on the northern green tip of the island which was the King’s homeland to Waimeia and then down to Kailua Kona. I would have and did drive right through the location of the ranchland Flynn bought and planned to live on! The entire area is beautiful, cattle ranches are in these hills and valleys and coffee farms spread right down to the water’s edge in some places. Great fun to drive along these undulating roads in a jeep, with scented air flowing over you. And eventually dropping down into the humid volcanic rockbed of Kona. Is there a place of beauty Errol missed in his short lifespan? Few, it seems!
