“Two Great Friends”

20 Sep

Near the end, Errol stated he had “had two great friends” in his life. Who were they? (A question, not a quiz!)

I would guess Ida Lupino and Ava Gardner.

I think one would be Herman Erben as his longest lasting friendship and the other was Beverly. Not a friend really but….
    Or maybe The Big Snook.

I should add that, though he did not name them in MWWW, he said they were both women.

Personally, I think wagram is halfway there, with a woman who was on TCM today with The Baron’s “First Rat Pack” buddie, Bogie.

I know Errol was very close to Ida Lupino. Ava was one of his drinking buddies, which makes me feel she was the other one. Ann Sheriden was also a drinking buddy but not as close to my knowledgel.

Could be, wagram. I don’t know. I suspect however that the other great friend was one of his (other) co-stars, with an uncommon first name that, like Ava & Annie, also began with an ‘A’ – and a very popular last name.

I believe Errol had a number of “great” male friends. I think he was making the point that ,due to his strained relationships with women which started with his mother, he only had 2 great women friends. Ida was one as his bio book would indicate I will throw out another Blanche Blackwell from Jamaica. who knows.

The sea may well have been his first love and main squeeze, delvan, but I believe Errol was speaking of flesh & blood friends. Perhaps not, though!

Thanks for the great music video, Tina!

I’m not sure, but I recall Alexis Smith was a good friend as was her husband, Craig Stevens. I believe Errol was best man at their wedding. I also have heard otherwise.

I reckon’ you’re right, wagram. I, too, think it was Ida & Alexis Errol was speaking of in MWWW as his “two great friends”.

And who else could get Errol singing in the saddle on the big screen like this?

While alive, Freddie McAvoy would’ve been a shoo in. True friends till the end were David Niven and Buster Wiles.

Among his closest male running mates, you’ve certainly gone top tier, buddieheinz.

The trouble tandem of Erben and McAvoy were most responsible for Errol`s wonders and woes. Bruce Cabot and Teddy Stauffer were close on and off friends of Flynn too.

Great photos! Don’t think I’ve ever seen them before. I believe Freddie was best man at Errol’s marriage to Patrice, I agree, Freddie McAvoy was one of his best male friends, if not the best. Herman Erben would’ve been another!

Absolutely, Mickey is on the starting team, David! He was a friend to the end, and even beyond.

The great guy in the back with shades on is the most underrated of Flynn friends. He should have carried the casket too: It`s Johnny Weismüller. Team him up with Dolores Del Rio and, voila, you get the most exotic pair of Flynnatics.

Indeed Dave, unfortunately there is no mention of Errol in the Arthur Marx Mick Bio “The nine lives of Mickey Rooney”.

No way I can vote against any man who did all this for Errol!
