Errol Flynn's genuine Sterling silver cigarette case late 1930's

10 Mar

Dear Flynn fans,

With permission of David Dewitt I hereby wish to place this blog intending to sell this extremely rare item, ideal for the serious Hollywood memorabilia collector. I decided now to sell some of my collection. I own a good number of Flynn genuine items, all with their individual Certificate of Authenticity of course. Recently I have sold memorabilia of Errol Flynn to a variety of international clientele. I decided to let the fans know…

While I prepared the blog, there was a glitch and the blog got onto the website slightly unfinished. Sorry about that.

What I wanted to add to it was that rather than writing the full and
lenghty description plus numerous photos (as this fabulous item deserves
that) and would definitely “clog the blog”, I would send any serious
customer it on a personal basis and discuss details.

I am selling items on a “no” profit basis, just like to cash out here.
Apart from this cigarette case of Flynn (given to him by his idol John
Barrymore), I also own a few sets of cufflinks andd ascots and last but
not least an extraordinary smoking robe in mint condition, and items
from other A-list celebrities of the Golden era like John Barrymore,
Paul Muni, Orson Welles, Gary Cooper etc.

One tempting photo of this case in extremely good conditon will follow
soon. This item has its own individual CoA from a very reputable source
that only trades in genuine and special items. On the reverse side of
the case are the very apt words for Errol's remarkable character “Full
of Sound and Fury, John”.

I am to please and maintain a highly ethical approach will all my
dealings. I like to keep my international reputation intact. The lucky
buyer should not have any worries at all, I sincerely hope it will be
another dedicated fan just like myself since I got hooked on Errol since
1985 .

Thank you.

Jan

Spain

Price: USD 3,995.

Any interesting parties can contact me through the website.

Jan I sent an interested buy your email address associated with the blog and sent you a message at that email address myself. It has been returned to me as undeliverable? I imagine the buyer will not be able to contact you with this address either?
Zac Coles in the interested party and you may find him on Facebook. Or send me a good email address and I will pass it along to him.

You are never too old to learn, old boy! It is my decision NOT to make a profit. Just want to release some of my collection, it is as simple as that. Errol would agree with me, meaning to divert from the normal and going for the unusual!

Peter Haugh. Very interested in your items. Not a collector , just a fan. On Facebook.
    Cheers Peter.

Don't think Errol would be happy that his personal stuff is being sold for a fortune. And in a way like this.

    Hi Peter,
Thank you for your interest. Since the item is on this splendid website, I got very good response indeed, no wonder actually. I am on Facebook also, please use the word Baronflynn and you will get me. I could send you the full description and if you wish to perservere I can send photos later. Then we can go into the next phase.

Baronflynn isn't pulling up anything for me? Can you give me a link to your homepage?

Terry, I don't think Errol would really mind. He might be happy to see so much interest in his life and career so many years after his passing and if owning something of his makes people happy I am sure he would not be angry about it at all. It is a very high form of flattery to have your things honored like this, and treasured by people. I think he would be smiling.

It is one thing to be interested in him – I agree Errol would be happy – and another to make a profit from the personal belongings of a man. I'm sorry, I'm normally just a quiet reader and I enjoy your blog very much, but I dislike the fact that it is being turned into a marketplace. Just my personal opinion.

Terry, we have always promoted the work of many of our blog members who for instance are writers or film makers. Errol Flynn memorabilia is no less interesting to many people and a subject that comes up here from time to time. I respect your opinion, however. I do appreciate that you felt comfortable expressing it, too. I hope you will continue to read and perhaps make more comments on the blog. We love comments!

Thank you, David, I will try.
Maybe I should explain why I feel so strongly about this issue, and you may forgive me. Many years ago, I was tricked into buying a very similar cigarette case for a similar price, also with a “CoA” from a “trusted” expert. Soon enough did I find out that it was not authentic, not even of Sterling silver, and I angrily sold it on the flea market. It is no problem nowadays to even forge CoAs. I don't want to imply anything, but it is the reason why I am allergic to this kind of promotion. I remember well the words used by the seller back then… nothing to lose, you can only win…
It is, in my humble opinion, a different thing to promote books or films based on serious research. I understand that the members whose works you promote (like Mr Marino or Mr McNulty) have been respectable members for a long time and are very reliable and also contribute to the blog with their knowledge. So I apologise for any negative vibrations I might have caused, but I felt like having to explain my reaction. Thanks,
    Terry

Terry, there is nothing to forgive. chum. I fully understand what you are saying and why you have mentioned it. While you are not impugning Jan in any way there are indeed people out there who are willing to go to extreme lengths to fool collectors into buying items that are not genuine and many times when items given COA's from reputable people are also fooled. We see this in the works of great artists whose drawings are forged and determined by experts to be genuine, even by the artists themselves. In the case of an item like this cigarette case there may be forms of proof that we cannot take time to post which are available to serious buyers. Sometimes, the best proof is to see a photo of Flynn using the item. My friend Jack Marino has one of Errol's cigarette holders, for example. This particular item was given to Jack by Errol's daughter Deirdre Flynn and she told him she was present when Errol accidentally damaged it creating a mark that is still on it. Aside from having it gifted to him from Flynn's daughter, you can see it in use by Flynn in photos so there is no doubt the item is genuine. Yet, at some time in the future without a photo detailed enough to show the mark or a letter from Deirdre his cigarette holder may well come under the same kind of doubt you mention here. It is only human nature to want proof and to have doubts when so much fraud is out there and always has been. I take Jan at his word, and believe he can provide the necessary standard of proof to prospective buyers, and that said, do appreciate your experience and opinion as a word of warning. Once bitten, twice shy, they say.

Thank you, David, I appreciate your understanding words very much. Is there actually a photo of Flynn using this cigarette case? Would be very interesting.

It's so tough to find exactly the candid you want to show something like this. I imagine such a photo exists somewhere in the private collections of his friends or family. Perhaps in the Barrymore family or some rare newspaper files someplace. Would be nice to see one for sure!

Just to inform that the EF case has now been sold and goes to a good home. I am pleased that I can pass this precious item on to another dedicated Flynn admirer like myself.

Hi, would you be considering selling any of the ascots you own, or perhaps even the smoking robe? I might die if I was able to own something he had actually worn!

    Dear Errolfan,
You can reach me on: vandervlietvnet@gmail.com…
Then we can converse about this intriguing subject between us. I can send you pictures of the smoking robe to your private e-mail, I would love to see it go to a great EF follower. It guess it is from the early 40's just like in that film “Never Say Goodbye” with Eleanor Parker, although that was made in 1946 in that scene where he looks at Eleanor expressing one of his typical sueve looks at her, resting his elbow on a sofa. It is a stunning designer “Nat Lewis” robe. The description said when I bought it: “A luxurious smoking robe of heavy, sumptuous satin, in a cranberry and gray blue motif. Trimmed and fully lined in midnight blue. Its satin belt has long, hand made fringe. In mint condition”. There you have it!
I guess if I put a photo on this blog, most fans would want it. I guess it is just another “volcanic hot” EF item coming up for sale. Comes with CoA of course. Has extremely good provenance so there is never any doubt there.
