“Little Sirocco” – Errol’s Fishing Boat from Florida

Further Research from Florida:
As we know, Errol owned some top of the line watercraft. One that has been almost entirely forgotten, however, is the 22-ft, ~ 3000 lb. fishing cruiser made for him by legendary Miami boat racer & builder, Paul Prigg. On April 15, 1940, Errol purchased from Prigg Boat Works (then located on the Miami River) a very highly regarded Prigg Deluxe Cruiser, specially outfitted for off-shore fishing with a top-of-the-line Gray Phantom Six 125-HP Motor and swivel fishing chair. It cost Captain Flynn $2466.60 and could be seen in the early & mid Forties in and around Newport Beach & Catalina, as well as very prominently in Acapulco, where he kept it at the Acapulco Yacht Club.
Errol named it “Little Sirocco”. I have no photographs to post (yet), but it would have looked very much like the one in the photo in the bitly link below – except with a far more dashing captain & & attractive crew!
Here’s some further info on the well-respected boat maker, who also pioneered airboats, motor homes, and unique 1940 speedboats pictured below! Errol likely met a few of those lovely riders!

Respectable authors, publishing houses, movie-, TV- and DVD-producers, recently Turner and Warner Brothers Inc. with their “Adventures of Errol Flynn,” have been respecting my copyright for 29 years now and have transferred royalties without being asked for.
I have always offered photos and data material to smaller publishing houses and private collectors for free as I am glad to see books, etc. published about Errol Flynn. These people have never challenged my rights and have always had the decency to name their source.
For example, only about two years ago I offered photos from my documentation (with a copyright annotation) to blog members via Ms. Inga Klein. The result was that gentlemen of the blog have spread copies of these photos on the internet. Last week, Ms. Klein made me aware of an entry with comments by a “Gentleman (?!)” Tim on the blog (which I have long not been visiting anymore).
This will be my first and last post for the blog now.
If a “serious” Flynn collector does not know my documentation – so be it. However, if he does not know the outstanding, scientific books by Tony Thomas, Thomas McNulty, or Robert Matzen, which include references and photos from my documentation, and if he has such a biased and hateful opinion of Dr. Erben, which reflects negatively on Errol Flynn’s friendship and respect of Dr. Erben, and if he thus shows such lack of expert knowledge – then his entry is not worth a direct answer from me.
I can only hope for the blog that it will, one day, receive new, factual, seriously researched material with scientific content from this Gentleman.

My dear fellow Flynn fans,
I want to bring your attention to one more colorful personality our Hollywood hero was attracting so often.
Joseph Dobronyi, born in small town Bicske of Hungary on April 2oth of 1922, was carrying the hereditary title of a baron bestowed on his family for defending the homeland against the Turks way back. Nicknamed “Sepy” (which corrisponds to “Little Joe” in Austrian language) he was a fighter pilot in WWII, narrowly escaping death when shot down and suffering burns to his neck because his scarf caught fire. After a brief stint as POW of the Russian Army, he managed to turn his back on fighting walking from Budapest to Stockholm/Sweden, a mere 1000 miles, which took him 6 months and maybe just as many boots.
It was there that he picked up the craft of jewelery designer as well as speaking Swedish, which should serve him well later in life. He supposedly spoke 5 languages, most of them all at once.
A traveller by heart, one day he took a flight to Caracas which made a stop in Havana. He decided on the spot that he needn`t go any further and that he had reached his dream destination. He set up an Art Center exhibiting artworks of local artists. Music was a feature there too, with Sepy assisting on the bongos.
He is also credited for coming up with the idea of transforming a shop into a tavern, which to this day is known as “la Bodeguita”.
It was there that he met celebrities from all over the world and became an international fixture himself. Ernest Hemingway entrusted Sepy with guiding him home to his villa, when completely out of orderly conduct.
The first encounter with Errol stems from the filming of “The big Boodle” in Cuba. They must have hit it off immediately, mostly because Dobronyi`s résumé (war pilot, noble man, globetrotter, lady-art-wine lover…). Flynn even made him production manager of “Cuban Rebel Girls” his second time around.

When Castro took over from Batista, it was deja vu all over again for the Hungarian baron. His strong anti communist sentiment let him take the ferry to Florida and apply for the American citizenship.
It was there on a film set when he met newly arrived Swedish Export Anita Eckberg. While everyboy was vying for the attention of this blond bombshell, he simply took her in offering her to go and grab a sandwich in Swedish. They even contemplated marrying in Las Vegas. But it was not to be, since the galcier was a vulcano and Sepy no paper-, but a paprika tiger.
He rose to fame and fortune in the US fabricating golden statuettes of female stars and starletts in the nude, amongst them Anita Eckberg, Ava Gardner and…Beverly Aadland! Errol ordered one of those knee high gold and bronze (legend has it that the precious metals were melted gold coins from sunken Spanish ships off the Cuban coast) plated figurines of his young companion for his Jamaican home. He didn`t live to collect it.
Sepy settled in Coconut Grove, imported primitive wood works from Bali and befriended Hugh Hefner. His architecturally acclaimed house had the shape of his zodiac sign- Taurus. The film “Lady in cement” with Frank Sinatra was filmed there as well as a (in)famous flic called “Deep throat”.
The Baron and the baron sure were two of a mind.

In the 1960’s there was no one more exciting than James Bond, Agent 007. Inspired by his success at the box-office, other studios tried to come up with their own version of a playboy spy.(Matt Helm, anyone?) This spy would be different. This spy would be American. This spy would be “ours”. But what man could possibly be more exciting than James Bond? The answer is obvious: Errol Flynn. Naturally, the studio couldn’t name their spy “Errol Flynn”. So they simply, ingeniously, altered Errol’s name ever-so-slightly and christened their American super-spy “Derek Flint”. At one point, Flint even beats up a Sean Connery-look-alike playing “Agent 0008”. In other words, only Errol Flynn could beat up Agent 007.
The first film in the series was named “Our Man Flint” and its poster made it clear that “our man” was better than Bond. ” ‘Our Man Flint’ makes love in 47 languages! He’s a Karate Champion, Brain Surgeon, Swordsman and Nuclear Physicist… He’s the top Master Spy of all time, with his Cigarette Lighter containing 82 Death-Dealing Devices, his 2 Man-Eating Dogs, his 4 Luscious Playmates and his Love Nest-Built-For-5……”
If the name “Derek Flint” wasn’t clear enough, the sequel left no doubt. It was titled “In Like Flint”, a not-so-subtle reference to “In like Flynn”.
The film spawned only the one sequel but they are both highly entertaining, thanks immeasurably to the wonderfully tongue-in-cheek performance of leading man James Coburn. But their legend lives on because we all know that only one man is better than Bond.

As zacal so timely reminded us in his very cleverly-named “NFL(lynn)” post earlier this evening, today is a big day in the National Football League – first day of the regular season.
This being so, an NFL-related Errol Flynn quiz seems in order.

Tonight is the opening game of the new NFL season. One of the most popular (and brutal) sports in the entire world. Each team tries to choose a name and logo that inspires thoughts of action and heroism. And two of them just might have been inspired by the renowned swashbuckler Errol Flynn.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ original logo seemed clearly to be patterned after Errol, complete with a twinkle in his eye.
And what could be a more exciting name than the one chosen by the current World Champions, the Seahawks?
The point is Errol Flynn continues to inspire images of excitement. When in doubt, go with the champion. Go Flynn!!!

In 1955, Errol Flynn made his final swashbuckler, “The Dark Avenger”. That same year, Danny Kaye made “The Court Jester”, a film that appeared to be a tribute/spoof of the swashbuckler films of Errol Flynn, complete with Basil Rathbone as the villain, Mildred Natwick (of “Against All Flags”) in a pseudo Una O’Connor-like role, as well as a Robin Hood-like character that seemed written specifically for Errol: The Black Fox. Was Errol offered the role? Probably. Instead, the heroic role was played by Edward Ashley, who received 12th billing. Of course, if Errol had played the role, his name would have been much, much higher in the credits. The film is still very entertaining.(and highly recommended for fans of Flynn) But if it had co-starred Errol Flynn, it would be much more famous.
