Who, What & Who?

04 Aug
Errol once (or more) stayed at the quaint little cottage depicted below. One of his fellow WB actors famously lived in the place. They were in a really good movie together once.

Who was it? What’s the name of his home? And who was the leading lady in the film?

CLUE: Today’s date is a big clue.

P.S. For 5 or 6 hundred pounds a night you too can stay there!

When the Queen of the Headhunters Met the King of the Swashbucklers

04 Aug
There’s a new biography about Sylvia Brett Brooke, the notoriously legendary, Queen Consort of the last White Rajah of Sarawak. Entitled “Best Exotic Kingdom”, it includes an account of the evening the “Ranee” “spurned” Errol’s proposal that he play “The White Rajah”. Meeting Errol, Lili & their pet Persian cat left a lasting impression on Queen Sylvia, one she herself described:

Though The White Rajah was never made, Warner Brothers did creatively use the title in Boy Meets Girl, starring James Cagney & Pat O’Brien, with a young Ronald Reagan “premiering” The White Rajah.

Last Rites for Barrymore

02 Aug

A body of evidence from Walsh & Flynn says yes. Others say no. Enquiring minds want to know. Where was John B’s Last Stand, or Sit?

DID ERROL FLYNN STEAL JOHN BARRYMORE’s CORPSE FROM THE MORGUE?!

Niven Rates Wicked Ways Best Autobiography

01 Aug

No, not that Niven! Jennifer Niven – the 22nd Great-Grandaughter of Geoffrey Chaucer! … No known relation to Niv, but, like David, a big admirer of Flynn. Wants to dance with him at the Troc, and take his Wicked Ways to a desert island.

ANOTHER FLYNN & SON DOUBLE FEATURE (OR IN PRAISE OF “THE BIG BOODLE” with a nod to “Mission to Venice”)

31 Jul

THE BIG BOODLE THE BIG BOODLE #2   MISSION TO VENICE #2MISSION TO VENICEMISSION TO VENICE poster

Dad in 1956’s Cuba and son in 1963’s Venice. Both with icy blondes and winning the good fight.

Both films made on location.

Errol ends a counterfeiting scam and Sean helps thwart the plans of some spies! Both win the girl! (Rosanna Rory for Errol and Karin Baal for Sean.)

“The Big Boodle” is one of Errol’s later films, but his presence and charisma are undeniable! (Released in the USA in the early part of 1957.)

In “Mission to Venice”, Sean is good in the action scenes and the film is a good document of its time. (Sean is dubbed in this one , but the dubbing on this film is good. It was sold directly to television syndication in the USA; released theatrically in Europe in 1964, a French, Italian,West German co-production.)

Both films are available on DVD, although Sean’s film can be seen on YouTube.–A. R.

Errol Started It All Back in the Fifties

31 Jul

Ever the trailblazer & trendsetter, Errol made Ibiza into what has ultimately become “the celebrity party capitol of the world” – where everybody has a knockout time, especially, most recently, Orlando Bloom, of whom Gentleman Flynn would likely be very proud. And then there’s Justin Bieber – no Flynn is he.

Errol started it all back in the early 50’s.

The Errol Flynn Mailbag! Hollywood Raquet Club

25 Jul

From our mailbag:

Here is a great website on the fabled Hollywood Racquet Club. Fortunately only a couple of outlying buildings burned. The Bamboo Lounge and restaurant are still intact.

Paul Gabriel

I mentioned in my reply that I see Linda Christian, a protege of Errol’s on the site, and Paul tells me: “Flynn ‘discovered’ Linda in Acapulco and bought her to Hollywood where with the help and power of President Aléman, she was able to break into movies.”

There’s a lot more Paul could say!

See also Match Point at the Raquet Club.

Thanks, Paul!

Match Point at the Raquet Club

25 Jul

The Palm Springs Raquet Club – within the 2-hour radius mandated by the studios – where, Hollywood lore has it, Marilyn was discovered and the Bloody Mary was invented. Errol was the brightest star of all, of course – on both the courts and at the legendary Bamboo Bar.
