Tasmanian daredevil

18 May

image

Dear fellow Flynn fans,

the Australian island state of Tasmania is the sole retreat of the “Sarcophilus harrisii”, commonly known as Tasmanian devil, a carnivorous marsupial. “It is characterised by its stocky and muscular build…for its curiosity in his prey and ferocity when feeding. Although it usually is solitary, it sometimes eats with other devils and defecates in a communal location. Devils are not monogamous, and their reproductive process is very robust and competitive. Males fight one another for the females, and then guard their partners to prevent female infidelity.”(source: en.wikipedia.org…)

Taz was also called home by our Hollywood hero, about whom studio boss Jack Warner once said, “To the Walter Mittys of the world he was all the heroes in one magnificent, sexy animal package.”

Now here is a risky undertaking by a young sport right in the middle of the rugged and relic landscape, that seemingly shapes as well as attracts daredevilish characters.

Ryan Robinson does an highwire act at Fortescue Bay, Errol would have been proud of.

EF TV 4

15 May

Dear fellow Flynn fans,

here is the Christmas week edition of THE STEVE ALLEN SHOW from 1957 with a sketch on American TV shows of that era. They called the spoof of spoofs “To tell a lie”. Oddly enough our Hollywood hero for once is the most sober of all the methadone actor participants. Don Knotts, Louis Nye, Tom Poston, Don Adams and Martha Raye pose as preposterous imposters. Lovely Rita Gam is in the mix too. She may have known Errol already from the wedding of her former roommate Grace Kelly with Prince Ranier III. the year before, where she was a bridesmaid. Now that would only have been possible if Flynn ever made it to Monaco. But this marital mistery merits a blog by itself. The search is on again. By now we are used to looking all over for him, aren`t we? (See: www.theerrolflynnblog.com…)
In this television series however he appears threefold, as “Erroly Trinity” so to speak.

Dear fellow Flynn fans,

Whenever Errol was Catalina dreaming he naturally went there with his Zaca.
And just when I thought I was in clear waters, the swashbuckler`s schooner turned out to be the “Shearwater”.
Here though is the real deal on reel: www.budgetfilms.com…

Much Moore about Flynn- episode 1

26 Apr

image

Dear fellow Flynn fans,

our Hollywood hero looms large in Roger Moore’s biography “Last man standing: Tales from Tinseltown” published as “One Lucky Bastard” in the United States. The second coming of James Bond had once been the prime choice to star as Errol Flynn.
But Roy Huggins’ projected filming of “My wicked wicked ways” was vetoed by none other than Jack Warner.
When Jumping Jack had to learn that Flynn spoke treason about him posthumou(r)sly, he had an extra removed from the Warner Bros. premises simply because the poor chap slightly resembled Errol.
Mooreover Roger remembered being summoned by JW while auditioning for the role. The volatile studio boss asked the young actor if he really wanted to star in a film depicting him, the movie mogul, as a petty thief. “Very much so.”, the Brit with esprit shot back.
Surprisingly the project was equalized on the spot and RM went on to become a Saint, a Persuader and ultimately a Double O’ Seven.

Crossing words with Maestro Musumeci

19 Apr

IMG_2961

Dear fellow Flynn fans,

I had the great pleasure to catch up with Maestro Renzo Musumeci Greco again. We met before, remember? www.theerrolflynnblog.com…
He was kind enough to share this snippetshot with you of a “Curly Errol” and an on location episode as told to him by his great late father, Enzo.
Our Hollywood hero the joker he was, came up with a new routine while filming “Crossed Swords” in Naples.
He sent an assistant to get him some pea sized firecrackers.
At an evening event he carried them with him and was looking to get rid of them what deemed to him as an appropriate moment.
When cocktails were served and he was surrounded by the usual bystanders, onlookers and wannabeseens, Flynn proposed a toast.
In the middle of his speech, he halted, wiggled his nose, and started picking it!
To the astonishment of everybody in the room he produced a round object… which he inspected thoroughly, before throwing it to the ground with a grand gesture.
When it exploded with a loud bang, there was quite a commotion in the crowd as one can imagine, while the perpetrating prankster was literally cracking up.
I call that stick “Grin like Flynn”.

favo4favo 3Favo ita 2favorita

Dear fellow Flynn fans,

this is the post where we come close but come up short detecting the ZACA at various locations: www.theerrolflynnblog.com…

Blogmaster Witty Dave asked his self before, if that could be the ZACA in the film “The Monte Carlo Story”: www.theerrolflynnblog.com…

The answer is Yes, but No. The yacht used in the movie supposedly was the FAVORITA.

The FAVORITA was a clipper ship, built in 1862 in Mystic, CT. The ship’s first owner was J.A. McGaw. The FAVORITA was rated at 1231 tons, and dimensions were 188′ x 37′ x 24′. The ship was built to trade between its home port of New York, San Francisco, and the United Kingdom. She was sold in 1874 to Pray & Dickens, also of New York, and to German owners Schilling & Meinke in 1879. The FAVORITA continued to trade until 1891, when it was reported to be hulked in East Africa.

She sailed at various regattas. See: www.nytimes.com…

My question to you Flynnmates now goes like this: With the boat looking exactly like the ZACA, could it be that many photos on the net of Errol`s sailor pride actually depict the FAVORITA?

Dear fellow Flynn fans,

let`s all toast to Doris Mary Ann Kappelhoff`s 92nd-94th birthday. Errol`s leading ladies are sure in for a long life. Originally cast by Michael Curtiz for the Warner Bros. movie “Romance on the High Seas”, Doris Day can look back at a remarkable career both as No. 1 hit singer and an actress alongside the truly greats of Hollywood. Here she sings what it was like to be graced by Flynn`s starry eyes gaze: www.youtube.com…

Dear fellow Flynn fans,

all roads lead to Rome so the elders said. I say many roads lead to Errol in the former capital of the Roman Empire. If you take the Via Appia, turn South and steer your chariot towards the Mediterranean Sea you will end up at Gaeta, a small port of a tourist town. Our Hollywood hero left his mark anchoring with the ZACA there many times.

Signor Cosmo Rao must be considered a true Flynnthusiast, since he manufactured a miniature model of Flynn`s truest love. It took him one year to complete and it is on display at Hotel Mirasole International. He used the finest wood and spent a grand on that alone. He loves all Flynn films and took up the task, after visting the ZACA courtesy of his amico, the then captain Bruno. He even was offered to join the crew on a trip around the world by its new millionaire owner. Even though his family is of Sardinian descent, he prefers to look at the sea rather from the beaches than from a ship`s rail. But what he loves most is looking at his masterpiece and explaining the various sections of the schooner. He studied the building plans meticulously and attended to every detail of Cap Robin Blood`s boat.

Here is an internet eagle eye`s view on little ZACA in all her splendor: www.youtube.com… .

Grazie Signori Rao and Ciano for a landlubber`s seafaring experience.

Enjoy,
