Would you like to feel ten feet tall? Mark Young does!

17 Jul

And why? Because he is related to Errol Flynn! Mark says, “As you can imagine, being cousin to Errol Flynn makes you feel about ten feet tall. My other claim to fame is that my uncle was Clark Gable's batman during the last war when he was stationed at RAF Polebrook in Northants, England. …Errol Flynn… …Clarke Gable… and I never did either's autograph!”

Rory Flynn, told of Mark Young, said, “Yes, Lot's of Young relatives in Hobart, too!”

EF Movie Review

09 Jul

Here's a fresh, but… awful… movie review of Elizabeth and Essex… apparently, the author does not like Errol at all but unfortunately, there is no opportunity to vent one's anger at this piece of writing…

Ahoy, the Sirocco!

07 Jul

Louis Vick contacted the blog recently to let us know he has 16 cushions that belonged to the Sirocco, Errol's famous yacht… he asks what value to place on them if he sells them? This would be highly subjective according to how badly a collector wanted to own them so I have no fixed amount that I can tell him would be appropriate. He gave me his email address and phone number in case anybody here wants to contact him. I will share that information with anybody who asks and has questions for him about the cushions. He sent some pics attached below. Some of them are thumbnails but you may be able to expand your screen to view them…

Errol, Fidel and the Cuban Rebel Girls!

05 Jul

Boyd Anderson's 2008 novel from Penquin Books Australia:

Errol, Fidel And The Cuban Rebel Girls
Author: Boyd Anderson

Category: Fiction
Release Date: 02/08/2010
Pages: 320
ISBN: 978 0 7022 3856 7

Based on true events, Errol, Fidel and the Cuban Rebel Girls recreates one of the 20th century’s great untold stories.

Cuba, 1959: In the final year of his life, Errol Flynn found time for one last adventure. The dashing star of many Hollywood films had always longed to be a real hero. Fidel Castro was the genuine article, and now he was looking for fame. What each man had the other wanted and, as revolution raged around them, the stage was set for an explosive encounter.

Cuba is on the brink of revolution and Errol Flynn is there making what will be his final film. When they meet, Errol is involved in the latest in a long line of relationships with under-age women, while Fidel is ready to march triumphantly into Havana after overthrowing the Batista government. Within days of the coup, Errol is chased out of Cuba with a firing squad and Fidel hot on his heels.

Featuring a full cast of Hollywood movie stars, beautiful women, Cuban revolutionaries and New York mobsters, Errol, Fidel and the Cuban Rebel Girls is the story of two men at the opposite ends of astonishing careers. It is a story with two heroes … but there is only ever room for one…

Well wishes for the Legendary RICK DODD!

25 Jun

In a personal email to me from our own Brian Twist, Bri tells me the new about the legendary Rick Dodd. Brian explains this news so well that I am quoting him here for us all…

“One other thing David – I would appreciate it greatly if you could post
something at the blog about Rick Dodd. I rang Rick today… I usually
ring every 4-5 weeks or so. I was going to go and visit him in the next
couple of weeks or so. He is very ill… and has just had a heart
attack. He sounded very weak on the phone, which broke my heart as he is
so very lively even at his age. He is the most amazing person I have
ever met… so kind… so eager to hear all on Flynn. He lives and
breathes Flynn… but in a very positive way. I passed onto him good
wishes in your name, and Karl’s… Jack’s and Robert Florczak’s… that
really made his day to know that he is thought of among the Flynn
community. Could you please post a blog entry for him and ask for
prayers and wishes. I can’t tell you enough what a great friend he is to
me and how it hurts so much to know that he is not his usual
full-of-life and sprightly self. I know that people at the blog know who
Rick is… and would spare a thought and prayer for him.”

Of course, we all offer Rick our prayers and well wishes for a complete recovery from his heart attack and to let him know how much he is respected in the Flynn community all over the world…

I am certain the first book I ever opened about Errol Flynn after reading My Wicked, Wicked Ways and wanting to learn more had several picture in it from the famous Rick Dodd Collection. This is a common experience among many Flynn fans over the years and I was always excited to see them!

Then to hear what a fine gentleman he is from so many people was an added blessing.

All the best, Rick…

Maureen O Hara film festival

20 Jun

On saturday I attended the Maureen O Hara film festival in Glengarriff its about a five hour drive from where I live but it was worth it. they screened “The adventures of Robin Hood” with an introduction by Rory Flynn who spoke about her father's early life before Hollywood, she read out a letter from Errol to his father in the letter Errol writes that he has had enough of his life in and around Australia New Guinea and he is embarking on a round the world trip which will finally end in England .

According to Rory Flynn this was a pivotal time in his life he told his father that and Im paraphrasing here, that you spent most of your time working to earn money to spend and only a very small time enjoying the benefits, so in this letter he more or less has made up his mind to grab life and live life to the full and not waste a minute of it and that he really didn't care about money.

I met and spoke to Rory Flynn she is such a nice person she has a very gentle quality about her and she very kindly signed my copy of her book

I happened to sit beside two Ladies who had never seen Robin Hood after the movie they said it was a terrific movie and Mr Flynn “was just too handsome and what a smile he had”

I enjoyed the whole experience and hope to attend next year
