Foreword – ??

10 Aug

Good morning:

Maybe this belongs in the quiz section but I'd prefer to put it out in the main section; the sentiment deserves a wider audience.
I recently read a very good biography of one of my favourite actors and the opening foreword to the book, I found especially moving (especially in a biography of an actor). The writer of the foreword may come as a surprise to many (myself included) but it could be interesting if some of you guys would like to hazard a guess on who wrote the foreword and of whom he was writing of. For those of you who have the book, and already know… maybe you could refrain from answering for a short period. There is a Flynn connection here.

Here is the foreword —

_____ ____ was as unique in his field as Mozart was in his. His composition was artless.
He didn't have an actory bone in his body. His voice and speech were part of the wind.
His intelligence was clear; devoid of traps or devices. His was a radiant beauty. He glowed
decency and warmth and firm resolute justice. He was charming, forceful and delicate.
Nothing showed. He breathed all the wondrous adjectives as though he were walking through
a park.
One night in a pub, a little old lady asked for his autograph. When asked why she wanted it
she said 'because you're such a comfort'.

PS: For David — Everything fine here. I was in London over the weekend but missed the riots – only just.

best wishes,

Brian.

Errol Flynn & Olivia de Havilland offset 'Captain Blood'

26 Jul

The series of photos of the screenteam fencing offset 'Captain Blood' in 1935 are without a doubt my favourite photo's of the two together – Last week I bought 2 photo's I hadn't seen before from this candid photoshoot off eBay and the first of the 2 arrived today – So I share it with you, sadly the scan turned out quite unclear, but I tried to edit the brightness to clear up the image as much as possible!

My plan is to get every photo from the series of Flynn and deHavi in this candid photoshoot and frame them as a set so I can look at 'em everyday!

ENJOY

Would you like to feel ten feet tall? Mark Young does!

17 Jul

And why? Because he is related to Errol Flynn! Mark says, “As you can imagine, being cousin to Errol Flynn makes you feel about ten feet tall. My other claim to fame is that my uncle was Clark Gable's batman during the last war when he was stationed at RAF Polebrook in Northants, England. …Errol Flynn… …Clarke Gable… and I never did either's autograph!”

Rory Flynn, told of Mark Young, said, “Yes, Lot's of Young relatives in Hobart, too!”

EF Movie Review

09 Jul

Here's a fresh, but… awful… movie review of Elizabeth and Essex… apparently, the author does not like Errol at all but unfortunately, there is no opportunity to vent one's anger at this piece of writing…

Ahoy, the Sirocco!

07 Jul

Louis Vick contacted the blog recently to let us know he has 16 cushions that belonged to the Sirocco, Errol's famous yacht… he asks what value to place on them if he sells them? This would be highly subjective according to how badly a collector wanted to own them so I have no fixed amount that I can tell him would be appropriate. He gave me his email address and phone number in case anybody here wants to contact him. I will share that information with anybody who asks and has questions for him about the cushions. He sent some pics attached below. Some of them are thumbnails but you may be able to expand your screen to view them…

Errol, Fidel and the Cuban Rebel Girls!

05 Jul

Boyd Anderson's 2008 novel from Penquin Books Australia:

Errol, Fidel And The Cuban Rebel Girls
Author: Boyd Anderson

Category: Fiction
Release Date: 02/08/2010
Pages: 320
ISBN: 978 0 7022 3856 7

Based on true events, Errol, Fidel and the Cuban Rebel Girls recreates one of the 20th century’s great untold stories.

Cuba, 1959: In the final year of his life, Errol Flynn found time for one last adventure. The dashing star of many Hollywood films had always longed to be a real hero. Fidel Castro was the genuine article, and now he was looking for fame. What each man had the other wanted and, as revolution raged around them, the stage was set for an explosive encounter.

Cuba is on the brink of revolution and Errol Flynn is there making what will be his final film. When they meet, Errol is involved in the latest in a long line of relationships with under-age women, while Fidel is ready to march triumphantly into Havana after overthrowing the Batista government. Within days of the coup, Errol is chased out of Cuba with a firing squad and Fidel hot on his heels.

Featuring a full cast of Hollywood movie stars, beautiful women, Cuban revolutionaries and New York mobsters, Errol, Fidel and the Cuban Rebel Girls is the story of two men at the opposite ends of astonishing careers. It is a story with two heroes … but there is only ever room for one…

Thanks to Films of Errol Flynn on Facebook!
