Errol’s Captain?

One Beveridge Too Many?

From the Daily Mail:

“Mr Cooper is a survivor of the infamous Marques disaster that left 19 drowned in 1984.”

“Speaking to the Times, Mr Cooper, a veteran ocean sailor who once captained a ship for Hollywood film star Errol Flynn, continued: ‘We realised the boat was not sinking and that the best place to be was on board. We sat it out until the waves pushed us far enough onto the reef to be away from the breakers.”

[I believe this is likely a misstatement by the Daily Mail, not by Mr. Cooper, who likely said he was captain for one of Errol’s (former) ships, not for Errol himself.]

Pirate Party on Catalina Isle! First Appearance!

All Flynn followers are familiar with the brief appearance of Errol and Lily in Pirate Party on Catalina Island, but there was always a little confusion about when this quiet little short subject appeared. To help quell any more questions, here is a clip from the Los Angeles Times newspaper of Feb. 12, 1936, page 11.

 

It premiered with the Charlie Chaplin film Modern Times.

A Salute to Elvis on the Fortieth Anniversary of His Passing.

Hal Wallis had seen one of Elvis Presley’s appearances on the Dorsey Brothers Show, and before the performance was even over, he was making calls, trying to get Presley to come to Hollywood for a screen test. Wallis remembers his first impressions of Presley in his autobiography Starmaker:

“A test was necessary to determine if Elvis could act. I selected a scene for him to do with that very fine actor Frank Faylen. Elvis would play a young man just starting out in life and Faylen would play his father, holding him back. It was a difficult dramatic scene for an amateur. But I had to be sure. When I ran the test I felt the same thrill I experienced when I first saw Errol Flynn on the screen. Elvis, in a very different, modern way, had exactly the same power, virility, and sex drive. The camera caressed him.”

Objective Brooklyn!

Grabbing breakfast this morning at the Brooklyn Water Bagel Company in Boca, I noticed the following 3′ x 3′ image. It’s a WWII era photo of the College Theater in Brooklyn, on the southeast corner of Flatbush Avenue and Glenwood Road. I can perrsonally attest that Flynn was HUGELY popular in Brooklyn, along the lines of a superhero – something touched upon in My Favotite Year.

Mail Bag! Cahill Interiors & Titchfield Hotel Check!

Errol/Titchfield Hotel

Hello, I just read your blog regarding the Titchfield Hotel. You mention a 10k check for the a/c. I happen to have a psa/dna certified cancelled check for $6437.54 paid to Cahill Interiors dated July 15, 1952. In the bottom left corner is written in Errol’s writing “Repairs a/c Hotel Titchfield.” I believe a/c means “and credit ” and not meaning air conditioning. And it’s then signed by Errol Flynn. I just thought I would write and let you know.

I enjoy reading your articles. I have often wondered if anyone knows what work Cahill Interiors did at the hotel for that this check paid for?

The check was signed: Cahill Interiors deposit to account Carol Parker Cahill. North Shore Bank, Miami Beach, Florida. Errol lived a fascinating life and I have certainly enjoyed watching his movies and seeing his many talents over the years. What an original.

“The Leonardo of Leather”

He made Errol’s Robin Hood leather boots, and lent his horse Don to Errol for “Boots”. He was Bob Brown. Norman Rockwell declared him “The Leonardo of Leather”.

“Bob Brown’s first job was to create the tunic, belt, shoes and cap for Errol Flynn in The Adventures of Robin Hood. Other famous owners of Bob’s work are John Wayne, Roy Rogers, Dale Evans, Lash Larue, Sunset Carson, Hopalong Cassidy, Tex Williams and many many more. There is a story saying that Bob Brown was the one who taught John Wayne his famous walk.”

Along the Santa Fe Trail

Errol is in the news today in an article about the also immortally great Glenn Miller, both of whom were voted number one male entertainer favorites at Asbury Park High School in 1939 – Miller for music, Flynn for film – assessments I’m sure were true throughout the country. Here’s the article, and the Glenn Miller Orchestra’s superlative version of “Along the Santa Fe Trail”, “intended for but never used for the 1940’s film The Santa Fe Trail.”
