The Sahara Connection

24 Mar

Many years ago I remember a conversation I had with a gentlemen who was family, though not blood related- my brothers and I considered him like an uncle, in fact we called him uncle John. He was involved with real estate in NJ where we lived at the time, he also dabbled in places like South Florida and Los Angeles – although never spoken about, we knew there might have been a “Wiseguy” connection; gulp!

He knowing that my father and mother wanted to move to South Florida, offered my parents a wonderful deal in the purchase of a motel that needed much work in the South Florida area known as Hollywood. In taking a leap of faith my parents took the chance and in time with a lot of hard work we made it happen.

Soon after we moved into that south Florida motel, uncle John made one of his visits. He and I were having a conversation when he brought up a real estate transaction he once was involved with in what I believe was in the 1950’s. In it he mentioned one of the players in this deal was none other than our man Flynn, himself! He asked if ever I had heard of him? To his surprise he learned very quickly how EF was my film idol. He proceeded to tell me a story of that transaction real estate that also involved EF; a partnership of a South Florida (North Miami Beach) area resort hotel called the “Sahara”.

In his telling of the story he told me how Errol loved the beaches there and spear fishing, which I knew that this would have been very true, for growing up in those same south Florida beaches, I and most of other teenagers, etc. would also spear fish while either snorkeling or scuba diving. Soon thereafter I followed up with becoming a lifeguard on those same beaches, in fact at another beach resort hotel right down the street from the Sahara. Everyday going to and fro work I would always slow down and look at the Sahara, and think how cool it would have been hanging out there with Errol spear fishing; to have been born a few years earlier, maybe I too could have had the opportunity to have joined him on his yacht, the Zaca, wow! that would have been something.

In any case, uncle John told me stories of how he, Errol and others would hang out while he was at the Sahara indulging in Errol’s pastime, a few drinks. They would pick Errol’s head about his days of Robin Hood or Captain Blood, etc., which according to uncle John, Errol would talk about them yet not with great pleasure. What a shame I used to think, to be so big in life to so many and yet for Errol to regret them in such a way. A few short years later, I in some way too got to understand this; prancing around on Rock and Roll stages, and not really being appreciated for what my real musical capabilities were, for you sort of feel like a cartoon freak as appose to the real hard studies you put in your craft. In saying this, we all know how Errol knew it himself to be better than that of what he was so looked upon; a character in tights and a sword.

I believe the Sahara is still up, but since I have not ventured that way in a good few years, I cant say for sure, nor to what capacity it resembles of old (see pics) – I also remember reading somewhere in one of my many books I have on Errol, maybe it was in “My Wicked Wicked Ways” or some other literature, which makes its mention of his association with that Sahara. Also if I remember correctly, he did not fare well with it soon there after – sounds like another of Errol’s later years in bad investment choices.

To me in some way feel blessed to have someone known close to me who actually knew the king of cinema, Errol Flynn, himself!  and to have heard some very cool stories first hand, and although I would have preferred to have been there myself, I guess this is a second best….

ERROL FLYNN AND ALEXIS SMITH AT MGM (1949).

16 Mar

Errol-Flynn-2015 Both Warner Bros contract stars and good friends Errol Flynn and Alexis Smith were loaned out to MGM to star in different films in 1949: Flynn in, ”THAT FORSYTE WOMAN” and Alexis in, ”ANY NUMBER CAN PLAY”. While there they would meet in the commissary, They found few people would talk or say hello to them. They were surprised how cold and unfriendly MGM was VS. WB. They were glad when they had the opportunity to see each other while both were making a film there. Here is a candid photo of Flynn as Soames and Alexis as
Lon Kyng. The photo speaks for itself.

Cooper and the Captain’s Sword

16 Mar

Rock legend Alice Cooper mentioned that he had the sword of Captain Blood, himself, Errol Flynn – The same in fact, once used in the movie.

The worst part for me was the he mentioned that this was the same in which I’ve personally seen him using while performing in his many rock shows.  We all know that Alice is  deranged, or plays the part on stage, yet I somewhat think it must follow him throughout; why would anyone use this sword, once used by the legendary Errol Flynn portraying Captain Peter Blood, in the famous movie “Captain Blood” (1935)?

My question to Alice would be; was this the same/actual sword used in that famous scene in which he pierces through Levasseur (Basil Rathbone) on the rocky shore lines (Catalina Island) and kills him? Or was it a secondary sword (extra), prop maybe? This would make a big difference. If so, show me proof!

It bothers me to know that someone (Cooper) would be so ignoramusly like, to take such a chance in destroying something so iconic, one of a kind, which should be either in the hands of someone who really appreciates it and remembers that one of the greatest star was born using it on this beautiful film, and/or donated to the Smithsonian Institute, so everyone has a chance to appreciate it.

Unfortunately for myself, for reasons unknown, I never ask him as we crossed path along the way, for I too was in the same world, a performing musician of that same rock world. I can assure you this though, if ever I cross him again somewhere, I will put that question to him, and as any who care so, ask also if he would like to part with it, for I would love to have this in my collection, wouldn’t you?…………

Mail Bag! Three Dons of Industry!

04 Mar

Today’s Mailbag brings this from Travis MacMillan:

Hi:
Recently saw Suzanne Issa’ post on Facebook referring to her mother with Mr. Flynn in Jamaica from your blog.

Made me remember a photo I have of my late Grandfather – Dudley G MacMillan and Suzanne’s father Abe Issa with Errol Flynn.

Thought you’d like the extra photo for your blog.

Travis M.

Caption: Three dons of their respectful industry in the 40’s. The Dean of Advertising, Dudley G. MacMillan with his first blue-chip client, Mr. Abe Issa, the father of Jamaican Tourism. To this day, over 80 years later, we’re proud to still be the local Agency of Record for the House of Issa. But wait…. who’s that in the background, the most popular swashbuckler of them all, Errol Flynn who surely dominated the Box Office in his time but was also a key player in developing Port Antonio into its golden era of ‪Tourism, including the still popular rafting down the Rio Grande River‬.

Mail Bag! Errol Reichow, on Mr. Errol Flynn, his namesake!

18 Feb

The Mail Bag brought a real treat today, and there was more in store as I opened the subsequent emails from Mr. Errol Reichow. Here is his first email to me:

Salutations Mr. DeWitt,
If you would be so kind as to post this picture to the Errol Flynn blog along with anything else you see fit it would be appreciated. I send my favorite picture to you of my namesake because it is by the pool where I grew up and the house I still have which is my own Shangri la. Please share the post if you decide to toss it up for those who may find interest.
My father (Otto Reichow) always used to tell me why he named me Errol. Zo mit his sic german acsunt I vould hear  ” If you have half the life Flynn has had then you will have had a good life”. Errol set the bar high and left behind a blueprint as ones did before him so we follow, walk along, and continue ahead down the path we all must travel but chose to in so many different ways which make our lives truly unique. Yes, my heroes gowning up were Errol Flynn (namesake), John Wayne, Bruce Lee, and countless other icons that added a spring to my step and kept a sparkle in my eye because that’s what inspiration does.
One could easily go on for pages about the stories but we all have caught bits and pieces in the wind that fill our sails and take us down memory lane and then with the next tack we are faced with present day reality yet look unto the horizon for a better tomorrow and try to keep a true course. It is said that some people should never die and others should never be born but that just isn’t the way life is so keep the best alive in memories and forget the rest for that is the natural progression and key to perseverance. From what I have heard Errol liked to live on his terms and why not it was his life and better to live it your way than somebody else’s interpretation.
There will only be one Errol Flynn and this picture, by my father’s pool, captures it in the twilight of a supernova. Errol has his Vodka and cigarette in hand as he waves with a smile maybe thinking thanks for a great journey and happy to have done it my way sport. With all the pain one can suffer in life and endure the hardships it is good to know that a smile can always be found just around the corner. This was one of the last pictures of Errol in the land that made him and tried to break him known as Hollywood. My father took Beverly and Errol to the airport to catch a flight to Vancouver and that was the last my father and the world ever saw of Flynn, but the spirit lives on for those who wish to remember and we remember because we want to not because we have to – that is how Errol and we all should live our lives.
So long Sport and thank you for a great name.

But there was more! In the next email …
Again, the attached picture is better resolution and this card is from the final memorial service held for Errol Flynn at Forest Lawn Glendale October 19, 1959. I am sure you can crop and enlarge the quarters. If you feel it is worthy of a post please do so.
EF
And finally these wonderful images!
Mr. DeWitt,
The attached picture is better resolution. I saw some old images of Flynn on your blog inquiring where these photos where taken, I believe the response was some hotel but I assure you it was from the home of my father Otto Reichow. The house is currently empty and is located at 1599 Sunset Plaza Dr in the Hills above West Hollywood. There are newspaper shots and various photos floating about from this location as a photographer had contacted my father and asked permission to come by and take some snaps. I have various shots my father saved and then others I see from time to time but felt compelled to clarify the location and mysterious gentleman to the right, my father.
Otto was also a pall bearer at Flynn’s funeral.

Errol, we can’t thank you enough for kindly sharing these extraordinary photos with us! It is such a rare and wonderful thing when somebody comes forward with images like this, and we all appreciate it so much! Your namesake looks like he is full of mischief, and has the expression on his face of someone looking about for the next source of a bit of fun …
Thanks again, Errol!
