A swashbuckling opening!

04 Jun

I thought I give a try to the new category Flynn-related and we will see if it works.

This article refers to the opening of the Errol Flynn Filmhouse in Northampton.

I did email to the Errol Flynn Film House in Northampton, not long ago, asking if they screen Errol’s films routinely.

A little while later the manager emailed me back saying they show his films only occasionally.

I hope since they carry the name sake of Errol Flynn, they should routinely screen Errol’s films, especially on his birthday, etc.

I believe screening Errol’s films on the big screens is an important way to keep his legacy alive, especially to draw new fans from the younger generations.

I think the reality, errolsfan, is that they simply thought it was clever to use his name (as he spent time in the area), no different than any other theater that takes the name of a notable but doesn’t really present his or her works. Being a business, the bottom line is key, so they show the films that bring in the most customers: current films. To show Flynn’s films, or others’ of the Golden Age, would be downright philanthropic.

This is definitely more the thinly related to Flynn, Tina, right? I surely hope so!

Regarding the Filmhouse, I wrote the management over a year ago to congratulate them on their upcoming opening and to suggest they debut with Robin Hood, referencing the facts that it’s Errol’s most famous, in its 75th Anniversary Year, and Robin lived in that very region of England! Talk about a Grand Slam pitch! Perfect, right!?!

Instead, they went with “Behind the Candelabra”.

No, not kidding, Tina. The young lady I communicated my recommendation to was most friendly, but management thought “Behind the Candelabra” was a superior choice to The Adventures of Robin Hood.

Perhaps they thought Michael Douglas superior to the Errol Flynn, and/or Liberace superior to Erich Korngold, and/or swinging behind Old Lib’s candelabras superior to Errol swinging on the vines & chandeliers of Old England.

I believe they missed the bullseye, Tina. Let’s give them another chance! This coming year is the 75th Anniversary of Sea Hawk! Perfect for Britain. And the 80th Anniversary of Captain Blood! Perfect for both Britain and the Irish. Let’s get them to celebrate those films! (Unless, of course, “Behind the Candelabra, Number 2” is released.)

Yes, Tina, they probably need to be Flynnstitutionalized for that, but let’s not bombard them. Let’s be very strategic. They’ll see it our way.
