It further shines a light on why Flynn wasn’t in in GONE WITH THE WIND. While the frantic search for the leading lady is common knowledge, it was new to me, that Gary Cooper was also considered for the lead role. Either way the film would have turned out ok. Ha ha! Thanks for the better image! I notice the amount for Gable wages looks like $150,000. In today’s money, that is $2,691781.50 … Still a bargain considering how much money that movie has brought in!
That’s a stunning ton of money during the Depression, David! The highest paid player in baseball that same year was the immortal ‘Iron Horse’, Lou Gehrig. Lou “only” earned $35,000, for the entire year, less than 25% of what Gable got for Gone. Maybe Gable was the Luckiest Man on the Face of the Earth, not Gehrig!
The average annual salary in 1939 was approximately $1800. Renting a home cost $28 a month on average. So, Gable scored BIG!
