A moust have

Dear fellow Flynn fans,

let`s just post here pics of Errolesque actors that wore the must have moustache at least for a while, trial & error.

Enjoy,

Silly Cabot. Everyone knows whiskers were for Flynn. A tricky kid he was.

It just dawned on me, redbaronheinz, that we should pencil in these pals of Errol. Though no one topped the tonsorial sublimity of Flynn, these three expatriates of England gave it the old Hollywood try.

Cantinflas’s ‘stache just can’t fly, hermanoheinz. It could use around another eighty days.

But here’s a mexican movie muchacho, the great Gilbert Roland, (with his wife and former radio co-star to Errol, Constant Bennett) constantly better lookin’ than his cinematic compadre and tin-can lookin’ fellow countryman, Cantinflas.

Kevin Kline seems to prefer the look for his next Broadway role, too. Fitting the part he will play, and older actor with his own wicked ways …

Nils Asther! A great addition, Maria! – with a fascinating connection to Errol, before he landed in LALALand.

Was Errol in Abdul the Damned?

An Abdul the Damned close-up from Tina. Thank you, Tina, for your superative work on this and so much other Errolian research!

Nils Asther also appeared with Lili LaLa Damita in “The Golden Butterfly” directed by Michael Curtiz….small world! No one can wear the moustache like Errol tho!

Further proof of the futile pursuit of the Flynnmeister’s heroically hirsute superiority. Little Richard’s pilosity in particular has too much velocity. Looks like he jumped back in the alley with long tall sally at least a few too many times.

And the upper lip oddity below should have been deloused and demoused long ago, forever extinguished from Water’s World, and ours.

Speaking of extra, shantyheinz, we shan’t omit “Selbstmord Freddie”, whose pencil thin may well have helped keep his through-thick-and-thin best friend Flynn out of the pen.

In case you were wondering what the connection Tom is with Errol:

Tom Conway (brother of George Sanders)starred in The Falcon. I have copied from a website:

“With his Bond-like resilience and devil-may-care banter, the debonair amateur sleuth known as the Falcon makes the viewer feel reassured and protected as he leads us down those mean streets in search of answers—and gorgeous dames.”

“Conway’s work in the Falcon deserves the Errol Flynn Prize for Formulaic But Consistently Awesome Performances. I’d also award him the Ronald Colman Cup for Fine Moustaches. If anybody ever looked more badass holding a teacup, I’ve never seen it. It’s not difficult to understand how the Falcon series—which RKO initially planned on cancelling soon after Sanders left—actually grew more popular once Conway took it over.”

According to this, hispidheinz, bacteria and mustard gas helped pave the way for Flynn and all the pencil-thins. But it was all kicked downhill again come the Great Depession.

Dear Sir Shang,

Inspired by the sedulity of this thrilling thread of yours, I have assiduously searched my ever-more-musty memories for evidence of who it was that first inspired our suitably hirsute Hollywood hero to wear a pencil-thin moustache.

After diligent deliberation – using the tried and true investigative method of timeline analysis – Voila! I now know!

First, it must be established that fearless thespian Flynn was essentially always hairless above the lip prior to Captain Blood. (Except, of course, in that Curious film in which he played the maniacal Mr. Moxie, when he wore that Magic Marker-thick monstrosity of a mustache, rather than a pencil-thin.)

Next, we see him in Don’t Bet on Blondes, No stache there!

Then, Blood. Barely more a ‘stache than Lady O Herself!

But then, as can be seen in the link below, Flynn charged forward after Blood with his famous pencil-thin.

www.tumblr.com…

So, what happened between Blood and Charge? … Who with a(n) (in)famous mustache did Errol meet for the first time in between Blood and Charge??

Three Clues: Lili was there. So was another famous foreign actress. It did not happen in the U.S., nor overseas.

(This is all in humor, of course, Sir Shang, but historically accurate nonetheless.)

Many would say this circa-’35 moustache that Errol saw was much more a moust-not-have than a moust have.

This (in)famous moustache that Errol saw for the first time in ’35 was connected to a woman with whom he allegedly once had an affair. He reportedly gave vague details of his brief, but memorable relationship with her, but did not include any mention of an affair in My Wicked Wicked Ways.

They first met in late 1935. He later described her as exotically beautiful, with long dark hair, and piercing eyes. At their first meeting, she wore see-through clothing with nothing underneath.

Are you sure, Sir Shang? I think Tyrone P. may have loaned his unibrow to Senorita Frida, who, in turn, loaned her pencil-thin to Mr. Flynn. Then Kahlo trotted off with Trotsky. Maybe Breshnev was inspired by her too??

A good guy, friend to Errol, and actor, but Knowles was nolo contendere to Flynn – except for, as you punnily put it slangheinz, his moust-have moustache. Here’s a bit of his obit:

“A moustache can make a difference. Without it, Patric Knowles was just another of Hollywood’s handsome British types, but with his upper lip decorated he was dapper, distinguished, roguish and dashing – just like Errol Flynn.”

www.google.com…

And here’s Errol engaging in a touch of Patricide, for his buddy/brother having twice made moves on Errol’s girl, first in Charge, and then in Four’s a Crowd.

I agree with you, s.h., P.K. was moust definitely a class act, stache or no stache (grassy Knowles or no grassy Knowles.) E.F., however, did write to him in the Summer of ’40 or so to address two urgent matters. First and formoust, P.K.’s decision to train in Canada as an RAF pilot. Secondly, to (humorously) chastise him for taking towels from the Hotel del Coronado, compromising Errol’s good name there.

dear doubleindemnityheinz,

Fred MacMurray knew he was no Freddie McEvoy, never mind Errol Flynn. So, maybe he thought he growing a pencil thin would boost his sex appeal. It doesn’t appeared to have worked as well as it did for Flynn, though he did end up with three sons, Uncle Charlie, and a shaggy dog, living with him.

Let’s ask Alexis:

Alexis, who looked better, Errol Flynn or Fred MacMurray?

Get a lode of John Loder in his pre-Lamarr days, frequencyhoppingheinz. On the day of their wedding, it is said, Hedy had the future Mr. Hedy Lamarr shave off his stash, forcing Warner Brothers to finish filming his parts in One More Tomorrow with a fauxstachio.
