I came across a Florentine Gardens nightclub programm with the signatures of Errol and Sophie Tucker on it. The Yiddishe Momme was one of the main attractions of the cool hot spot famous for its nude dancing dinner shows. Marilyn Monroe sat front row, Yvonne DeCarlo took center stage and our swashbuckler buckled up in his seat.
The location became also infamous for his patron s involvement in the Black Dahlia murder case. Mark Hansen was a main suspect in the slaying of Elizabeth Short, when his little black book with phone numbers of honorable Hollywood clientele was found under her belongings. One page was missing. Hansen got cleared, but was later on shot in a separate incident by a furious female. “Few flowers flourish in the shades…”

Sophie Tucker was a beloved nightclub and Broadway entertainer for many decades. She made seven films but always played herself, the tough jazz singer. She really only connected with live audiences. I recall seeing her perform live on the Ed Sullivan Show in the 1960’s. And the Black Dahlia avenger turns up again! Thanks Heinz!

Unsubstantiated news just in. In the crimson crime noir book “Daddy was the Black Dahlia killer”, the author Janice Knowlton states that Elizabeth Short dated Paul McWilliams, the actor-archer who had a bit part in Objective Burma. He supposedly introduced Beth to Errol Flynn one night. I wrote to Steve Hayes if that can possibly be true. I hope he will comment on this topic , since a fact check seems in order here. Furthermore another BD writer, John Gilmore, had been a regular at Googies, so maybe there are actually two or three sides to this story. Steve!?
Very interesting, b.d.heinz. Janice may have gone nuts, but not everything she said was inaccurate. As they say, just because you’re paranoid, it doesn’t mean they’re not after ya’. Thank goodness, though, Chuckie Pigham never met up with Janice. He would have then added to his absurd allegations that E.F. also committed the Black Dahlia, Jack the Ripper, and Zodiac murders, in addition to running all the extermination camps for the Nasty’s.
… Just kidding, Paul MacWilliams was a very accomplished man, who started in the movies at 4 months old, with Mary Pickford, no less.

Just a little backstory about Elizabeth Short. Years ago my mother, the late Clarie (Martian) Marino she was from Malden, Mass and she knew and hung out with Eliazbeth Short, with a lot of other girls. She told me she was called the Black Dahila way before she moved to Hollywood. Short’s mother and father were divorced and she was living with her mother in the Malden/Medord area. Her father was out here in Hollywood. My mother said she was very pretty girl and was very quiet and they would all go to the dance halls around the Boston area to see the big bands. Elizabeth Short was very popular girl in her high school years, it was after high school she left for Hollywood and into Hollywood history

Holy Hollywood Horror, Jackman! Your Mom and all Beth’s friends must have been hearbroken. What a despicable thing was done to the Black Dahlua, both by the degenerate sicko(s) who so brutally tortured and killed her, but by those in the media who have destroyed her reputation.
There was a book a while back by a childhood neighbor of Bette’s which serves to confirm exactly what your Mom told you about Beth in Medford many years earlier.
Whoever did it should have been drawn and quartered. I think there’s good evidence to believe notorious VD doctor and abortionist, George Hodel. was involved or cognizant. Whether O. W. murdered her seems extremelyy unlikely to me – but, remotely possibly, someone who knew of the butchered Crazy House mannequins that were later deleted from TLFS. Seems though the studio bosses may have wanted more to destroy O.W. than protect him.
Here’s Hodel’s “Jaws House”, which was filmed by Scorcese for The Aviator (as Ava Gardner’s house). A lot of secrets buried there, in Los Feliz.

Jack, was your family familiar also with Mary Pacios aka Mary Humphry, who claims she was babysitted by Beth Short? The Pacios were neighbors of the Shorts in Medford alright, but I wonder if Mary who authored the theory of Orson Welles as killer really was from Boston in the first place. She interviewed the son of Barrymore friend Gene Fowler before writting her book on the BD. Will Fowler found her accent phoney. And John Gilmore, who dated Pacios/Humphry later, essentially told the same story (“I knew Elizabeth when I was 9 years old…”) and came up with another suspect. OW was a wild and horny guy when it came to serpent tongue in cheek references to Lord Lucy. Just take a closer look at his filmography, Waroftheworlds Tim.But he was only one of many Hollywood hotshots who nearly got a heart attack when Elizabeth Short was found dead. She clearly stuck out of the crowd everywhere she went in LA as a real life Snow White! I think he had a hunch who might have done it and escaped questioning by police, emigrating to Europe. In his first interview in Italy he chose paganism for a topic. Go figure…
