These documents are fascinating. It is interesting that Lili is listed under her real name, since Damita was a stage name. (I believe it was some Spanish noble who uttered when he saw her for the first time, “Que damita!” meaning “What a little lady!” referring to her apparently petite stature and she was called “Damita” ever after.)–A. R.
P.S. She apparently had lied to Flynn about her age.

Flynn also said this in his autobiography that Lili lied to him about her age.

Also in this form it states that he has grey eyes, not brown.

Hi David;
I posted Errol’s Immigration form once before on the blog but I can’t find it. How does one trace posts? There were very interesting posts connected with it, a great pity to lose all this information !???
Any solution to this problem?

This was the copy I posted way back and without picture as it says “Do not attache photograph to this declaration”, I wonder why? Maybe my copy is an earlier copy and the picture is added later when the process of immigration is completed?
As always – question, nothing but questions.

Thank you Tina, I forgot about this and It reads very clear.
It appears Errol just waltzed across the border. What a beautiful name Lilly had. I think it was better than Damita.

The ship lovely young Livvie sailed in on – the “Siberia Maru” – has a rather fascinating history. Her and her sister ship (“Korea”) were “the largest and finest ships on the Pacific when the entered service (in 1901)” with “no expense spared on equipment.”

In 1904, Jack London, the great adventure writer who Errol admired and was inspired by, I believe, sailed the ship to Japan to cover the Russo-Japanese War.

After bringing the best doll of all (ODH) from Yokohama to America in 1919 , the Siberia Maru ultimately returned in 1927 with a legendary shipment of over 12,000 American dolls to the Hina Matsuri (Doll Festival)

Now we just got to get all the relevant websites to record that this is the ship that brought us the immortal Olivia DeHavilland!

p.s. David. Wish I had that exact street address for Livvie during my EF tour of LA a year and a half ago. Knew she lived on Nella Vista Avenue (in the lovely neighborhood of Los Feliz ) and had read a description of the home, but I could only narrow it down to two, maybe three, possibilities. Now, with the address you provided, I just went to Google Maps and confirmed which one it was. Beautiful! Thank you!!

With regard to the Mexicali crossing where Errol was officially processed, I visited there with my son two years ago. Foreign Hollywood stars used to cycle through there in the 20s and 30s when they needed to reenter for various residency and registration purposes.

The crossing itself looks different than it did in Errol’s day, but Mexicali and Calexico look much the same.

Funny, Senor Fleen looks poquito Mexicano in that photo. Too bad Orson didn’t cast him in a Touch of Evil! That could have been some superb Flynn Noir.

And here’s the home Errol & Niven rented from Rosalind Russell, at 601 North Linden. (They also stayed/partied down by Marion Davies’ seaside mansion, in a “cottage” they called “Cirroshis-by-the-Sea”.) Looking very much like it did in ’38, here’s 601 No. Linden. (btw, Bugsy Segal got whacked at 801 No. Linden, Virginia Hill’s place.)

Hard to read but very interesting. Olivia was a very fresh beautiful young woman without the stage makeup! It’s no wonder she’s the grand dame she is today!

Very cool to see the document from Olivia de Havilland, as I have a 4″ x 5″ nitrate negative made that same day [7 July 1939] — probably just after the doc was signed!

I love Google Mags and street view! Sometimes, if I am watcvhing an old movie and spot a real street name I can go see the filming locations as they look today. Unimaginable when I was a lad and there was no internet! Or personal computers! I’ve been to 601 North Lindon, and at Kacvk & Louise Marino’s legendary 100th birthday party for Errrol in Burbank, met the lady who lives in the house. Nice lady, what a party that was. You can look on the blog for Tom McNulty’s account of it …
