Mail Bag! Errol Flynn Lounging on a Deck Chair?

16 Jul

In the mail bag we get this question from Linda Costa …

Hello there, Linda in Queensland here.

I am chasing a very specific image of our friend Errol. I have seen it on the web somewhere but cant for the life of me find it again.

It shows Errol lounging on a deck chair/ bed on a ship (not his boat), cigarette clamped in his teeth, possibly sunglasses on, with one of his wives also, on what I assume is on a liner crossing the Atlantic. He looks pretty dishy ….

If you can help I would be very grateful. I want to use this image for a presentation I will be making in Denmark next month.

Many thanks,

Linda Costa

ps it may have also been used in an article in The Australian Weekend magazine at about the time of the Centenary …..

This is a photo of Errol and Lilly on some boat or ferry here in Los Angeles. In the 1937 Life Magazine the caption of this photo says, ‘the Master of the Sirocco relaxes. This is not a photo of Lilly and Errol on a ship coming to America. This is sometime in 1936 in order to make it into the Life Magazine that Errol is on the cover in ’37. As I said this could be a ferry to Catalina or a ride to San Diego in some chartered boat. At this time Errol was a huge superstar why would he go on a public boat he would have no privacy. This is surely not the Sirocco the boat is way to big and too small for a cruise ship.

Ahoy Jack!

The source for the photo states:

“Errol Flynn, on board a yacht with his wife, French actress Lili Damita, circa (1938).”

as well as this further info:

“Date taken: 31 December 1937”

BUT… according to the “Ro Flo” timeline, in the midst of RH filming and doesn’t seem possible so… QUESTIONABLE date?
