John Carroll Rides (The Tonga?) Again!

21 May

John “Zorro” Carroll was a running mate of Errol’s – in California & the Caribbean. Years later, Carroll, quite the playboy himself, claimed to have a boat Errol “gifted him” in Florida, specifically, from what I can decipher in St. Petersburg. Some have said (including Carroll himself reportedly) this boat was used for some very adventurous adventures in the Caribbean (which I won’t go into right now, until I have better researched.) Does anyone know what boat Errol “gifted to” Zorro? There’s reason to believe it may have been the Tonga, and that this is how the Tonga may have made its way to St. Petersburg!

Gentleman Tim;

This is something new and fascinating about Errol Flynn. Please keep us informed.
John Carroll was originally a star at MGM and declined Louis Mayer’s offer to renew his contract. Instead he signed with Republic Pictures and everyone in Hollywood thought he was crazy. You jumped from Republic to MGM not vice-versa unless your career hit the skids. Instead Carroll’s career flourished with a string of hits at Republic including The Flying Tigers (1942) with John Wayne and The Flame (1947) with Broderick Crawford and Vera Ralston. At MGM the scripts went first to Clark Gable, Robert Taylor, Robert Young, Robert Montgomery and even Lew Ayres before he got it. At Republic he shared the top spot with Wayne. Thanks
