He or she had a prominent connection to Abe Lincoln. Honest, Abe. … And his father knew John Wilkes Booth’s brother.

This fellow was no Tramp, Lollie, but a famous fellow may have mistakenly thought his (our mystery man’s) brother was Charlie. Errol was once in a film with that other famous fellow’s female interest.

It’s a good bet someone can name him now! Will it be Ralph?

    Gentleman Tim;
Sorry but my internet service was down this morning. I get the clues for Murder At Monte Carlo. My guess is that it’s Patric Knowles. Let’s see if your confidence in me was misplaced or not!

    Hi Tim:
Your puzzle is intriguing but somewhat confusing, one doesn’t know if you are looking for one person or for two as in your picture is just one person?
In the picture you show a lady but in your questions and statements you are mostly talking about a man.
    Anyway here it goes!
You ask “Who is He or She?”
As ladies come always first here is about “SHE”
She is and in the picture:
Lucille Mendez was born on June 30, 1907 and died August 1982 in Hollywood.
She was an actress and has four movie credits: 1935 Convention Girl, 1928 Coney Island, 1926 Bigger than Barnum’s, 1924 The House of Youth.
She was married to Ralph Ince from 1926 – 1932
    He is:
Ralph Ince director and actor – only in his early years. Was born January 16, 1887 Boston, Massachusetts and died April 10, 1937, London, England
    Came from a Famous Family:
Lucille did not (at least not to my knowledge) Ralph did – a famous film making family, together with his two bothers Thomas and John.
Had Interesting & Unusual Connections to:
    Abraham Lincoln:
Ralph Ince played Abraham Lincoln in 1914
    William Howard Taft:
    Unknown to me.
    A Dictator Named Castro:
Lucila Méndez – Lucille Mendez plays Rosita Castro
Hope you can find a translation to this link: tochadas.net…
Was a Talented & Successful Actor or Actress:
I am sure both were talented people – successful was really only Ralph.
Was Involved in a Robin Hood Movie:
As Ralph died in 1937 it was not “The Adventure of Robin Hood” 1938, could be only the 1922 version with Douglas Fairbanks and Allan Hale playing then also Little John. Errol was only 13 years old and not dreaming of stardom just then.
As by 1938 only these two versions where around. The next Robin Hood movie was made in 1950 I believe. So, in which Robin Hood movie was Ralph or Lucille involved?
Was Involved in a Pivotal Part of Errol’s Life:
Ralph Ince, while working for Warner Bros. in England, was instrumental in signing the young Errol Flynn to a Warner’s contract. Yeah, then he was dreaming of stardom!
Almost Made a Movie Involving Nora Flynn:
Here we are really cold, icy cold – I think we are so cold as in “Northern Pursuit” 1943 – Nora just came into Errol’s life. So – Ralph had passed in 1937 and I somehow can’t believe that Lucille would have had an interest in that venture? Did they even know each other?
Another Clue is Present in This Photo:
A clue of what? Almost Made a Movie Involving Nora Flynn? Or a clue of any of the other titles you quote?
I think to clarify some of the mystery would be nice and in order.
    Take care!

Firstly, my apologies to everybody for the long delay in getting back to you all. I just finished 10 hours or so of driving “the long way” (scenic route) with my Mom(!) from South Florida to St. Augustine. We’re down by the fort right now! Apologies to Ralph also who thought I was speaking about him, when I was actually saying that “Ralph” was “half” the answer! … Sorry, Ralph. That was a cheap trick, for which I may have my authorship rights revoked! All you guys are so good, though, I have to be pretty cryptic with these clues!

Hello Tina! Good to see you back!!!

You must be right, Tina, about Ladies always coming first, because You Win! It’s Ralph Ince! Director of Murder in Monte Carlo – the movie so crucial to Errol’s getting from England to Hollwood. Obviously (now), I have two Monte Carlo casino photos, one exterior/one interior, the interior one with a roulette table, which figures in the MIMC plot, as I understand it.

Lucille Mendez! Excellent!!! Besides the Ralph Ince connection, she was the daughter of strongarm Venezuelan leader, Cipriano Castro!

That’s Marion Davies waving (it is said) from W.R. Hearst’s yacht, to Ralph’s very famous brother, Tom. Many, of course, believed Hearst shot & killed Thomas Ince, mistaking him for Charlie Chaplin!

Ralph Ince’s father knew Edwin Booth. Ralph himself was legendary for playing Lincoln, as in his once-very-well-known “Gettysburg Address”, which is pictured above. Thomas Ince produced & directed “The Battle of Gettysburg”, which was the forst movie plyed in The White House, but amazingly did not include his brother Ralph, thought to be the greatest Lincoln of his day.

And that’s Ralph Ince squaring off against Edward G. Robinson (in Little Caesar, I believe)

BTW, before he directed Errol, Ralph directed silent screen star Evelyn Brent in Lady Robinhood! Robin Hood is what likely led you to say Fouglas Fairbanks Jr., Robert, but I don’t believe he connects to all the other clues.

Lastly – in the trickiest of them all! – before he knew EF! -Ralph Ince almost made a movie called “Alias Nora Flynn”!!! (The original title, “Alias Nora Flynn” ultimately evolved into “Alias Mary Flynn”.)

That was some great, great work, Tina! And thanks to everybody. Sorry I had to be so cryptic! But you guys are are just too Flynn good for easier clues!!

Boris Karloff & Evelyn Brent in Lady Robinhood!

You are a very tricky man to say the least and it did not take long to figure out the things I submitted as the picture of Lucille was familiar to me and I knew she was Ralph Ince’s wife. Years ago I researched Ralph Ince, for what reason I can’t remember but I kept my notes. Through that I knew that he was instrumental in getting Errol to Hollywood. Thanks for saying I won, but not really as I did not answered all the questions.
You did not say that an actual movie was involved, like – ANOTHER CLUE – A MOVIE TITLE or something to the fact.
Furthermore you don’t answer re – William Howard Taft and Another Clue is Present in This Photo?
And how this fits – That’s Marion Davies waving (it is said) from W.R. Hearst’s yacht, to Ralph’s very famous brother, Tom. Many, of course, believed Hearst shot & killed Thomas Ince, mistaking him for Charlie Chaplin! – is not quite clear to me in regards of relating to any of your questions. In which of your questions would that be a fitting answer?
Also, your question of famous family, are you saying that Lucille Mendez’s name was really Castro and her father was a Dictator? Then what about my link I sent when Lucille Mendez is playing Rosita Castro? What is this all about?
        Yeah, I am tricky too!
        Take care!

Authors on the EFB are so good, Tina, that I had to be cryptic. At first, I tried to be much less so, but found that any quiz based on them would be too easily solved here.

If I had known someone (aka You!) would so rapidly know Lucille Mendez on sight, I would not have included her photo! I’m certainly no expert on Lucille Mendez (or Ralph Ince)(or most anything else), but I did read thst she was Cipriano Castro’s daughter. I’ll try to find the link for you.

The photo of Marion Davies waving from W.R.’s Oneida only became a clue because of Lollie’s thought that the answer might be Charlie Chaplin!

Something I read while researching Ralph said that, despite widespread belief, “Birth of a Nation” was Not the first movie played in (Wilson’s) The White House. Rather, it was “The Gettysburg Battle”, famously made by Ralph’s brother, Thomas Ince. Surprisingly, however, Tom did not include his brother Ralph, the best Lincoln portrayer
          portrayer in the world.

            Confusion be thy name:
No answer on that? Furthermore you don’t answer re – William Howard Taft and Another Clue is Present in This Photo?
            And no answer on that?
Then what about my link I sent when Lucille Mendez is playing Rosita Castro? What is this all about?
You are on the hook and I don’t let go, I want all the answers!

The Clue in the Photo was Lucille herself, Tina. That’s Lucille sitting there in the photo, Cipriano Castro’s daughter:

I understated the strength of the clue above, Tina. As I originally thought, but forgot last night, Ralph Ince WAS Lincoln in the first movie played in The White House – “Battle Hymn of the Republic”. President Taft was visibly moved:

Thank you very much Tim for this INCE link that is a great site. I wish I would have found it when I researched Ralph Ince long ago. I did a lot of research then and have many good records, but this one is great!
                Take care
