Mailbag! The Adventures of Casanova!

04 Oct

A recent posting brings this Mailbag item from fron close friend Karl Holmberg, Flynn Detective from way back …

A photo Tim posted led me to a minor discovery- the radio log for The Modern Adventures of Casanova. (Don’t remember seeing this before.) It lists 39 shows (titled, briefly described, or blank) but I’m still pretty sure only one was broadcast (and thus survived: Missing Arms of Venus de Milo) as I only found just the one in the radio program listings of the newspaper (NYT) for the time period it was intended (1-3-52 to 1-8-53).

CURIOUSLY, the 5/22/52 Venus episode is what survives and yet a review on 1/9/52 appeared for the program (which would have been timed to the first episode ’s viewing of 1/3/52) “AGING LOTHARIO NOT SO GAY AS RADIO CASANOVA: He Sounds Exactly Like an Errol Flynn REMENIH, ANTON, Chicago Daily Tribune”.

I have provided, below, this so-called radio log:

The critic from the Chicago Daily Tribune said that “this swashbuckling mademoiselle chaser reads a script loaded with improbable situations, double entendres and what I suppose is Riviera playboy talk.”

“Little Sirocco” – Errol’s Fishing Boat from Florida

02 Oct

Further Research from Florida:

As we know, Errol owned some top of the line watercraft. One that has been almost entirely forgotten, however, is the 22-ft, ~ 3000 lb. fishing cruiser made for him by legendary Miami boat racer & builder, Paul Prigg. On April 15, 1940, Errol purchased from Prigg Boat Works (then located on the Miami River) a very highly regarded Prigg Deluxe Cruiser, specially outfitted for off-shore fishing with a top-of-the-line Gray Phantom Six 125-HP Motor and swivel fishing chair. It cost Captain Flynn $2466.60 and could be seen in the early & mid Forties in and around Newport Beach & Catalina, as well as very prominently in Acapulco, where he kept it at the Acapulco Yacht Club.

Errol named it “Little Sirocco”. I have no photographs to post (yet), but it would have looked very much like the one in the photo in the bitly link below – except with a far more dashing captain & & attractive crew!

Here’s some further info on the well-respected boat maker, who also pioneered airboats, motor homes, and unique 1940 speedboats pictured below! Errol likely met a few of those lovely riders!

The article is written over several pages so I had to select the 1st page of the article and then the section that has the last few pages.  Enjoy!

Erben Myths – What’s the Truth About Hermann Erben?

29 Sep

There are some contradicting theories and competing contentions regarding Hermann Erben. Most notably, did he or did he not do work or favors for the Nazis?

Personally, I suspect he was an extremely selfish and often immoral man, who even went as far as using his unwitting “friend” Errol in a self-serving scheme to aid the Nazis, in Mexico, Spain, the U.S., and elsewhere. I also believe his endlessly selfish deceit and profound misconduct
gravely hurt Errol, and still severely hurts Errol’s family & legacy. … Despite so, I’m wide open to and strongly encourage all honest evidence and argument to the contrary. Who knows, we may learn something that completely undermines the widely held belief that Erben was no-good.

ANYONE who has evidence Erben did not help the Nazis should state so and identify that evidence here and now. This invitation and encouragement notably extends (but is not limited) to you, Herr Fegerl. From what you say, I gather you were a friend of Herr Erben. So, please do weigh in with whatever evidence you may have concerning these well known and long standing charges against Erben. Here’s your chance, if you can, to prove these charges wrong – something I would welcome. If Erben is being falsely accused, that should be thoroughly documented and condemned. If not, that should also be made known.

Let honest research, analyses, and debate begin.

Erben
