Dear fellow Flynn fans,

My dear friend Ilona Ryder, a former teacher at the Grant MacEwan Community College, has made her promise true and wrote an intimate portrait of her grandfather Michael Curtiz.
For the first time using never- before- seen documents she lifts the veil on this famous director`s family ties, trials and tribulations. Let me tell you this: he was a busy man!
Besides directing up to 175 films on both ends of the pond and speaking several languages simultanously, he constantly kept falling in love all over again. These liasions resulted in various children, who finally have a say in (t)his biography.
He managed to keep in touch with his loved ones, helped where he could during those dire times of war and never forgot his Austro- Hungarian roots.
If you like me are into cinematic anecdotes from an up close and personal view, you are in for a treat.
Mrs. Ryder interviewed many people over the period of 20 years (Lady Livvie being the most prominent of the lot) to add an angle to the film maker and family man who brought us Casablanca, The Adventures of Robin Hood and Yankee Doodle Dandy.

Now, who may Olivia de Havilland mean by this?
In an interview yesterday the youthful Warners star that she ‘could fall in love’ with one of the leading men she has had in pictures.
She insisted it was all theoretical, but Hollywood immediately began to count the lads over the fingers.
They consist of 5. The first was Dick Powell in A Midsummer’s Night Dream. The rest have been James Cagney in The Irish in Us, Joe E. Brown in Alibi Ike, Errol Flynn in Captain Blood and The Charge of the Light Brigade, and Frederic March in Anthony Adverse.
Even if she is just theorizing, Hollywood would like to know which is Olivia’s ‘type.’

Being that this is the day after D-Day, with the Allies beginning to bring freedom to France once again, this post will be in the lingua franca of Normandy.

Jusqu’à l’excellent La Patrouille de l’Aube (1938) de Edmund Goulding, où les escadrilles de gentlemen, menées par Errol Flynn et David Niven, conduisent une guerre dans les airs, et partagent des verres sur terre. Quatre ailes en toile, deux mitrailleuses bon marché, une carcasse métallique, un moteur en guise d’âme, il n’en fallait pas plus à ces aviateurs pour s’élancer vers une mort inévitable. Portraits de ces fous extraordinaires, ces premières œuvres semblent déjà mettre le doigt sur un certain amour du risque, où disparaître dans les nuages s’apparente à inscrire le courage de ces pilotes dans de nouveaux mythes.
