I just love Errol in The Perfect Specimen,it is such a fun movie to watch and he is so funny & sweet in it.I know it hasn’t been officially released on DVD as yet,but I just wanted to let everyone know about a place which recently listed it for sale as a Public Domain DVD.They post worldwide and the price is very ,very good.I recently bought a copy ( and also bought In The Wake Of The Bounty from them) and it is terrific.The quality is very good,I would say about 8.5/10.The DVD has no artwork or anything & just comes in a paper cover with the film title on the disc. :)

Thank you for the info. As this too is one of my favorite Flynn movies, I have already made inquires to the company as to whether or not their DVDs are region free and will play on DVD players from the U.S.–A. R.

Time to polish up my Polish.
Finally had a chance to view the copy of “The Perfect Specimen” I ordered and having only seen it once before when it played at the Regency in Manhattan during a celebration of Warner Brothers Studios, it did not disappoint. (BTW how is a film that has “TCM” in every shot in the public domain? No matter!)
It is an even better film than I remember. 52 years before Arnold Schwarzenegger played the “perfect male” in the comedy “Twins”, Errol as Gerald Wicks is bred to be the “Perfect Specimen” in much the same way pulp hero, “Doc Savage” was. (Talk about the first super hero!) Errol proves, that had he been given a chance, he could have been Warner Brother’s answer to Cary Grant, much the same way Tyrone Power was given the chance to play a variety of roles over at 20th Century.
His leading lady is the delightful Joan Blondell. She and Errol have great chemistry together. She is not only comely, but fun to watch. The film is a delight and features several great character actors from the period. Along with May Robson as his grandmother, we have Edward Everett Horton, Dick Foran, and Allen Jenkins and Dennie Moore (who also turn up in Errol’s “Dive Bomber”. Allen Jenkins also lends support to Errol in “Footsteps in the Dark”.) The film is a great screwball comedy and is a welcome addition to any collection of Errol’s movies. If you don’t already have it, I say, most definitely get it.–A. R.
Thanks, A.R. (and Lollie!) Very cool! I gotta see it! It sure seems Errol had great fun with, affection for, and probably eyes for, both Joan, and her sister Gloria.. (The photos below are pretty good evidence of that!) Joan and her hubbie Dick Powell were part of the elite ensemble that used to party with Errol down at Rosarito Beach in Mexico, back when it was the place to be.
Listening to the Cecil B. DeMille Perfect Specimen Lux Radio intro below, it sounds like Joan rivaled Errol for miles logged in their younger days.

That 2nd pic is great,they are so good together in the movie,you must get it Tim you will LOVE it.It is one of my faves which I will be watching again this week when I have my ‘Errol Movie Night’. :D I wish Errol & Joan Blondell had made more movies together they are alot of fun in The Perfect Specimen that’s for sure.
P.S. I only realised a while ago that Joan Blondell is the old waitress at the diner in the film Grease.
@HH – TPS is just a screwball comedy & definitely a very wonderful one,the whole ‘Perfect Specimen’ thing comes from Errol’s Grandmother in the movie grooming him to be perfect in every way.
I have not seen this film but am intrigued. Are you saying there is a fantasy element (the “bred to be perfect” part)? I had always thought this was “just” a screwball comedy.
No, there is no fantasy element in that sense, and it is a screwball comedy! Errol’s character has been educated and trained like the heirs-to-the-throne of olden days when they were educated to be superior to their subjects and Errol’s grandmother has had him raised to “captain” the industry that is the family fortune. Thus he is to be the “perfect specimen”!–A. R.
