The Golden Shanty

09 Oct

After reading several books which touched on Flynn's last film and how difficult it was for the director and actors to work with him I was curious to watch The Golden Shanty.  Then I came across the attached review and it motivated me to obtain a copy.  I have to say that I agree with the reviewer.  Watching the interactions and seeing Flynn with that famous grin was well worth the price I paid.  The segment is like watching an old Gunsmoke episode.  Patricia Barry was great.

So this was his last film ???

Not exactly. This was a made-for-TV film which aired after Flynn's death. It's less than 60 minutes long. His final work before the camera was a short TV skit on The Red Skelton Show.

Mine is 30 minutes and my DVD includes a half hour of Errol Flynn Theater where he plays opposite his wife, Patrice Wymore. I wish she would put these out on DVD–does she not have any rights to them?

You can regularly find a bootlegged copy on eBay, where I obtained mine.

The Golden Shanty was directed by Arthur Hiller, a wonderful man who was a joy to interview. Under his direction Flynn turned in one final (and touching) performance). While making this TV film may have been problematic, the end result is worth watching. As for Cuban Rebels Girls, I'm pleased that someone can find quality in that film. Beauty is truly in the eyes of the beholder, without or with large quantities of rum to kill the pain.
