Mail Bag! An Errol Flynn Flynn Costume!

03 May

Mail Bag brings us an email from a dear friend of mine:

David
I have to share this with you.

Last october my 16 year old grand nephew asked if I could sew him a costume for a party – didn’t refuse.  He wanted to be Don Juan after seeing EF in the Adventures of Don Juan.  Well, with so many costumes EF wore it would be a challenge so I told him I would create an entirely different Don Juan costume and below is the result.  He also wanted a sword.   Real if possible.

I have a friend who owns a collection of swords and took along my grandnephew so he could select just the right one.  He selected one I thought would compliment then got set in creating the costume but had to get his measurements and he stands 6’2.  Big challenge.

Sword was only a loner but because it was illegal to carry  a weapon I had to get permission from the police which they did but had to come to party as well.

The costume was a hit and as precautionary sword was only shown to those who asked and with police nearby.

My grand nephew had a wonderful time at the party and the sword was returned to its rightful owner.

You see how snappy my grand nephew looks in his costume but the sword is hardly  visible.

On a sad note the gent who loaned him the sword died the other night and their linking drugs as cause.  What a shock.  Funeral is Wednesday and as he requested long before his death he wanted some EF music played at service.  I checked my cds and am toying between the entrance of the gents in Private lives Eliz/Essex or the Sea Hawk when EF is presented to the queen.  Which In your opinion would be ok?

Grandnephew is now 17 and hasn’t asked for the imaginable this time but I’m sure he will.

Have a wonderful week.

When in Rome

02 May

Dear Flynnstones,

with the world waiting for a new pope to be elected, Rome these days again is caput mundi.

Also Errol was very much in focus, once he arrived at Stazione Termini, visiting St. Peter and doing as the Romans do…(1:20 min.)

A Topper Tidbit! Errol Flynn Tennis in 1935

29 Apr

Here is an article and some screen grabs of Flynn playing in a  tennis tournament. Lily went to the club with him as a spectator. He played in the singles tourney and was eliminated, but he continued on in the doubles matches and won.

Farewell Maid Mariandl

23 Apr

Dear Flynnstones,

shortly after Easter, Mrs. Waltraut Haas passed over at age 97.

She was to play Maria, the second female lead, in Errol‘s ill fated Will Tell.

Never ill willed and always a good sport, she told us all about it: www.theerrolflynnblog.com…

She is an Austrian actress icon and will forever be remembered as Mariandl, a role that made her famous at the tender age of 17:

She enjoyed 80 more years on screen and stage alongside stars like Curd Juergens, Heinz Ruehmann and Karlheinz Boehm.

Although Flynn missed the appleshot and she never got paid, she spoke about our Hollywood hero fondly.

Enjoy,

Praise for Errol as Custer

10 Apr

Today I received the book Custer and the Little Big Horn by Jim Donovan. To my surprise I found Errol in it aswell. In one of the last chapters of the book Jim writes about the movies that were made about Custer and the famous battle that cost him (and his men) his life. Errol is praised for his role as George Armstrong Custer. And the scene that is mentioned in the book is one of my favorite parts of this movie. Here you can see what was written and the photos in the book.

Errol Flynn from Late October 1942 to Day Before Rape Trial January 10, 1943

A lot of goings-on in that short period of time. A hectic time for Flynn and still he performs  in front of the production cameras.

The Pirate’s Daughter

02 Apr

Recently I stumbled upon a book that mentioned Errol. The story looked interesting, so I bought the book. It was published in 2007 and maybe some of you heard of it.

In 1946 Errol arrives on Jamaica with his yacht Zaca. Ida Joseph meets him and falls in love. It takes 3 years before she becomes his lover. When she finds out that she carries Errol”s child, she expects him to divorce his wife and marry her. But life is not as simple as that.

Both Ida and Errol fight their own demons. Their daughter May also has her own problems. This story is not so much about Errol but it is a nice read. I really like it.

Margaret Cezair-Thompson got her inspiration when she heard stories of Errol living on the island. It is (ofcourse) fictional, but we see Errol as he lived there. Patrice, Lily and Beverly all appear or are mentioned, but they have fictional names.

It is interesting to read how Errol’s life could have been on the island. The main story is about Ida and May and how they deal with their lives.

You can find the book on Amazon and bookstores. I bought it through my local bookstore in the Netherlands, so I think it can be ordered easily from the USA or other countries. I haven’t finished it yet, but it’s nice to read about the man behind the moviestar. Even if it is fictional.
