I have 2 photos that show Errol arriving at the Scripps Institute and meeting with Carl Hubbs. I had not seen these before and I thought you may enjoy.  These photos are posted with permission  from “SIO Photo Lab Collection, Special Collections & Archives, UC San Diego”.  The gentlemen with him  are the Director of the Scripps Institute Harald Ulrik Sverdrup (in the business suit) and Carl Hubbs (in the white coat).

In researching the photos I came across an interesting book- Eye of the Whale: Epic Passage From Baja To Siberia written by Dick Russell. There is a section in the book that describes just how dangerous the gray whales were that Errol “supposedly” fell into during the filming of “Cruise of the Zaca”. Another book “Saving the Gray Whale” by Serge Dedina also mentions how the noise of the helicopters drove the whales into a frenzy. I don’t think Errol was around for that -imagine the frenzy that Jack Warner would have been in!

Wonderful photos, Maria. Thank you. I believe the story behind the making of Errol’s Cruise if the Zara could itself be a fabulous movie.

The “gentleman in the suit” is one of the greatest oceanographer of all time. He was then director of SIO, but going much further back was on one of Roald Amundsen’s most famous Polar explorations, via the so-called Northeast Passage. In a couple of previous posts, I explored the possibility that Errol may have had a connection to the legendary Amundsen’s through the step-grandfather who so very much impressed and inspired him – Grandpa Andrew Hammer.

In this French clip magnifique, Monsieur Errol can be seen lifting out of Mulholland and for SIO in La Jolla, meeting up with Harald Sverdrup & Carl Hubbs – as well as the very notable Laura Hubbs, featured very favorably by Errol in “Cruise”.

A nice addition to Prof. Hubbs account of their expeditions posted here on the blog some time ago. Thanks, Maid Maria. PS: That`s Hubbs hanging out of the helicopter as depicted by John Decker.
