MGM’s 25th Anniversary 1949!

10 Feb

1949, MGM’S 25th Anniversary dinner featuring dozens of the studio’s major stars, including Clark Gable, Errol Flynn, Greer Garson, and many others. You see Errol misplaced in line as the stars are announced and his name is never called so he simply enters, anyway … And sitting having a meal next to Greer Garson. Several stars are unaware of a passing camera, and Gable has some kind of hilarious complaint to make but there is only one sound portion in this video.

    Hi David;
    I seen the whole show it was great. I was at the time of “That Forsyte Woman” and Errol was so wonderful in it, a fantastic performance! He should have got an Oscar for it!
    What movies do you or any of our members think Errol should have received an Oscar?

      If I could give him an Oscar for any performance of my choice it would from the following: Robin Hood, They Died With Their Boots On, Gentleman Jim, That Forsythe Woman, The Sun Also Rises, Uncertain Glory, Objective Burma, and The Sisters. Of these, I’d narrow it down to Robin Hood, Boots, Sun, Gentleman Jim, and give it to him for Boots, and for That Forsythe Woman. A supporting Oscar for Sun, and Roots of Heaven. However, he should have been given an Oscar for Robin Hood, if not at the time, then certainly for being unequaled to the present day.

    I just realized David that MGM had their 90th anniversary just last year – 1924 – 2014. I wonder if they celebrated? If they did I sure missed it!

    Hi Tina Of course captain Blood , Then Robin Hood really goes without saying. But 1 of the movies I really love is Cry Wolf he acted so brilliantly in it. The first time I saw it the suspense killed me. And many think the roots of heaven. I think Gentleman Jim is also a Oscar winner. if it went on acting ability Errol should have received many Oscars but the politics got in the way. SO SAD

      ..and you will never see their like again! Loved the clip- many thanks for posting that David. I recently saw another clip from 1974 (maybe?) hosted by Sammy Davis and Liza Minnelli- such glamour on the stage!
      Oscars? Well Robin Hood for sure and even Elizabeth and Essex.

    Failing to even nominate Flynn for Robin Hood betrayed the Academy’s appalling lack of objectivity and good judgment. As a virtual unknown up against Mutiny on the Bounty, I can more understand Errol being wrongly overlooked for Captain Blood – but not even nominated for Robin Hood, Gentleman Jim, and George Custer – that’s absolutely outrageous.

    They were bitterly envious of Flynn. Not a one of the best actors he was up against could have done what he did – on-screen, or off.

    And they resented him because his refusal to cower to Hollywood was regarded as dangerously treasonous. He was years ahead of everybody. … Still is

    Lifetime achievement in and out of Hollyrock, full Oscar! However Robin of Loxly takes the cake! The later films are very intensely Errol and I need to see “To much to soon” again and “Master of Ballantrae”. But for a kid of 12 Cap’t Blood, Sea Hawk and Custer was awesome at the time.
    i can just hear Errol “Got a flask under there Greer?” LOL!
    And Gable “Can’t ya see I’m tryin to eat here”, LOL!

      That’s awesome. Juanderful that Don Flynn was able to make Miss Miniver (aka Red) “scream and faint”!

      Thank you, greerheinz.
