Not exactly a “friend” but Dan Topping (husband of Sonja Henie and owner of the New York Yankees) once knocked our hero down at Sonja’s birthday party. They remained “the best of friends”.

If you ever have time please listen to the Parkinson Interviews (BBC) with David Niven – there is more than one – and he mentions Errol, recounting the story of the lance up the horse’s behind during the filming of the “Charge of the Light Brigade” He loved Errol. What a delightful person he was –

Yes, Niven was great! He and Flynn shared a house rented from Rosalind Russell, I think, during one of Errol’s breakups with La Damita … And Niv always defended Flynn from the Higham charges, as did Mickey Rooney. I wrote Niven twice and received letters from him postmarked from France and Switzerland where he had homes. If you want a great read do read Niv’s The Monn’s a Balloon and Bring on the Empty Horses which has a chapter on Errol.

I have been curious about the career of the Chauvels who gave Errol his start. There is a lot of information on the Internet as his films have been recently released in DVD format. What a life! I think it would have been great if Warner’s had lent Errol to do a picture with the Charles Chauvel during those heady days –

Hi David- I did read both and just loved them. I am not sure in which one David meets up with Flynn in later years and (if I remember correctly) they just sit quietly in friendship. I could just picture it.

You’re right, I can’t recall which book that meeting is in, either, but it must have been wonderful. I am told Niven used to walk every morning to a small cafe in Gsstaad, and sit having breakfast. If you recognized him, he would invite you to sit with him and talk. If I had known this while he was living I woulkd have moved Heaven and Earth to go there and spend that kind of time with him. One of the best storytellers in the world, can you image?

You know some days I cannot string 2 words together and I am always impressed with how well spoken David , Errol and Olivia were – lovely to listen to. As for Gstaad I would have been right behind you. Our world is so different – who is there today in the entertainment world that you would want to listen to for an hour or so? If I have a chance I am going to look through those books at the library and find the passages.
