Another interesting story #2

31 Oct

Did you know that Errol had a sheriff's star attached to his Mercedes? Maybe one of our experts could give a hint as to where this star originated from? I couldn't find an answer to that question. It must have been the Mercedes he received as a present during his visit to Stuttgart in 1953.

Also, I attach a picture of Errol's visit in Munich in 1953 (somewhen in April), with him in traditional clothes, a beer mug and two weisswuerste in his hands and a little boy on his knees. Watch out for the hat!

My EF logo designs

26 Oct

Hi fellow Flynn fans!

Attached are my Errol Flynn logo designs. I used two Adobe programs to make them : Photoshop and Illustrator. You might recognize the headshot of Errol used in the designs…it’s a rather “well-known” side profile shot of Errol (it’s the same one used on the cover of Robert Matzen’s new E&O book), and one that I particularly like, so I decided to incorporate it. I used a flag because I thought it would make a good “backdrop” and because flags are often seen flying on the masts of boats, yachts, and ships. So I created “Flynn flag” logos, complete with Errol’s image, his famous signature (which is beautifully scriptive, in two different styles), and Errol’s square-ish question mark symbols (which of course he created for himself, to symbolize his own life). I kept the image of Errol in grayscale, and used only 3 other colors in the logos: black, blue, and green. Why those 3 colors? Well, black is reminiscent of a pirate flag, blue is for the water/ocean/sea which Errol loved, and green is for the lush jungles/trees/vegetation Errol encountered in his travels (New Guinea, Jamaica) and was often surrounded by. Not to mention it’s also Robin Hood’s signature color as well. So that describes Errol Flynn logo designs 1 and 2.

The third logo design resembles the previous two, except that this one has Errol’s initials in place of his profile. Otherwise, same flag, same question mark symbols and same 3 colors used. And the fourth logo design has the same 3 colors, same EF initials, same question mark symbols, but this time I used a shield instead of a flag. A shield to symbolize Errol as the warrior/soldier/hero, with a “bulls-eye” pattern of circles in the center of the shield (to symbolize an archery target; Errol as archer).

So these are my four logo designs…I hope you like them. I may create others, I don’t know yet. I was actually thinking about creating a logo design (or two) for Errol and Olivia, together — an Errolivia logo.

Errol Flynn at the Berlinale

25 Oct

Remember the photographs of Errol and actress Romy Schneider, where we tried to find out when and where they were taken? I realised then that apparently, not much is known about Errol's visits to Germany, so I decided to do some research and here's what I came up with. Hope that this is not old news. The article is based on the German “FilmJournal” from May 2nd, 1960. I did not want to translate Errol's quotations literally (this would have been a back-translation because everything had already been translated into German) and I apologise for any mistakes.

Errol Flynn arrives for the Berlinale film festival in Germany on June 20th, 1957 at Tempelhof Airport. A band is playing for his 48th birthday, and he himself conducts it for a moment before borrowing a camera from a photographer to shoot some photos himself.

About 500 fans are there to cheer and to escort him and Patrice to the Hotel Kempinski.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = “urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office” />

This is where Errol’s mood changes abruptly. Seeing his rooms 310 and 311, he starts shouting that not even at school did he have to stay in such a small room – that’s outrageous! He phones the airport to get back to Paris the same evening. When Dr. Bauer, the Berlinale manager, tries to calm him and to tell him that he hardly has a chance to get any tickets, he answers that he will rent an airplane. If he cannot get one here, he will order one from Paris! And if this is not possible either, he will rent a car and drive through the “zone”, i.e. the GDR.

For Dr. Bauer, these are the most critical minutes in the seven years he has been the manager of the famous film festival. He tries to get other rooms for his star – to no avail, for the head receptionist declares that he is not interested in the fact that Mr. Flynn is a guest of the federal government. The hotel’s permanent guests are more important; and besides, all apartments are occupied.

Now Dr. Bauer tries the Hotel Gehrhus, which is known for its obligingness towards artists. Mr. Gehrhus decides at once: since the Grand Apartments (with three large rooms, two balconies, a bathroom with a telephone) are already occupied by an industrialist, Mr. Gehrhus moves out of his own flat and offers it to the industrialist. So finally, Errol can reside in a more befitting place…

24 hours later, all his anger is forgotten.

He says that he likes it very much in Berlin and that he is about to convince his secretary to let him stay five instead of the scheduled three days. He can be seen dancing with Patrice at the Waldbuehne or flirting with Izumi Yukimura…

A sad note…

24 Oct

Hello everyone,

I recently acquired a number of old German film magazines and with them some, as I thought, rather rare pictures. I will post some more Berlinale news soon, but I also came across this rather sad side note. It is a picture of Deirdre and Rory at the funeral of their father. The caption says that they have been so much “Hollywood treated” (I don't know how to translate this in another way) that even at this sad occasion, they keep smiling for the cameras and forget why they're actually here…

The Italian Errol!

17 Oct

Have you ever heard Errol speaking Italian?  Here it is – hilarious! The fire in his words – just divine, all of you must watch it – I love it!
He starts speaking in about the middle of the video. I know it isn't him speaking, but a worthwhile minute of your time and you really can see his fabulous acting!

Best regards to all of you,
