Pushin’ Like Flynn — Four Score and 100 Yards Ago

06 May

An EFB Four Score News Report*

Los Angeles Evening Herald Express

Harrison Carroll – May 7, 1937

If photographers had been outside the Club Marti the other midnight they could have shot an even more unusual shot of a Hollywood star. Errol Flynn discovered that his tiny English car was out of gas. On a dare from a friend he hoisted up the automatile by its rear end and pushed it wheelbarrow fashion to a gas station 100 yards away.

* As always, all credit and thanks to King Karl Kognoscenti Holmberg for the records making these EFB News Reports possible. Mille Grazie, Karl!

This photo above shows Flynn in an AC16/80 Convertible. There were very few of these special 1936/37 AC16/80 models distributed by the English Motor Car Company. Flynn got one, Cooper got one, and Frank Lloyd Wright got one. This photo was taken at 601 North Linden in Beverly Hills, the beautiful Tudor where he lived when he was estranged from Tiger Lil’ circa ’37. So, it may be the “tiny English car” referred to by Harrison Carroll in his news story above. (The garage is still there, on Carmelita Street, the street that intersects with North Linden.)

Thanks to Sergio for research and information identifying the make and model of Errol’s very rare British speedster.

Most of all, Highwayman Tim, Errol was pushing boundaries. In his first car ride in Hollywood he got a speeding ticket. Maybe we should establish a timeline for Errol and his (custom made) cars: www.coachbuilt.com…

Xcellent question, TZ! It would be great to track down all of Errol’s menagerie of motor vehicles.
