Hello everyone,
I hope I don't function as a spoiler for something that might be coming from our Spanish authors, but I came across this German article and I thought I'd share the information. If you want to read the original, go to
http://www.mallorcamagazin.net/nachrichten.dba?490+2+0
and scroll down a little. For all those who do not speak German - here's the essence of the article:
Many people at the island still remember Errol Flynn, including Martín Xamena, the director of the hotel "Bon Sol" in Illetes. This was the hotel were Errol stayed first when he came to Mallorca in 1954. Xamena was 8 years old then, and at the time, there were only two buildings in Illetes: the hotel of his parents and a villa by the sea, the "Can Fe via", inhabited by a married couple from the US and their children. Errol and Patrice became friends with the couple, and Xamena, who often played with the neighbours' children, also met Errol Flynn. The children were playing with old swords the parents had bought, and Flynn joined them, fencing along through the garden and the woods like a young boy.
After Errol and Patrice had bought a house near Cas Catalá called "El Molino", they were still guests at the "Bon Sol" to dine at the terrace. I think we have seen some photos here on the blog. Errol tried to seduce the German receptionist Barbara, a legendary beauty, but Patrice stepped in in time.
Josep Planas-Montanyà, a photographer in the 1950s, also remembers a trip with Flynn. They got along well and he spent many hours on the Zaca with lots of alcohol, until Errol had drunk a little too much and fell overboard.
Flynn enjoyed drinking Cuba libre, he allegedly said he just needed one small bottle of coke on one bottle of rum.
Errol's favourite night spots were the "Bierschwemme" of the"big Rudi", and the "Tirol". Like the Hotel Bon Sol, also the "Tirol" still exists. There you can find the photo with Errol wearing a corsett, which we've seen before. The villa "El Molino" does not exist any more, it was destroyed in 1989, but parts of it were re-built as a fountain. There exists a memorial stone for Flynn and Wymore in Illetes. Patrice returned to Mallorca in 1985 and said that she had seen Errol drunk only once.
Maybe our Spanish authors know something about the memorial stone and could provide some additional pictures and information?
I hope you'll all have a pleasant weekend!
Kind regards,
Inga
